FIRST CLASS MAIL IN MY MAILBOX ...

Last night at Spokane Chapter while honoring Marilyn Bordner, East Side Chairman of the Deputy Instructors, Worthy Grand Patron, Terry Wiggins,
broke protocol and during his response asked Associate Patron, Dick Hemming, to be escorted to the East.  Terry recognized Dick's kindness to members of
the Order and Dick's hard work and then asked if Dick would be taking his Harley to Sturgis, South Dakota again.  When Dick said he might in the future Terry said he would have to ride a little further announced that Dick was the new Grand Representative of Iowa.  Brother Dick was very surprised. Congratulations to a well deserving Brother.

MESSAGES FROM MY MAILBOX ..

For a Short While, Let’s Pretend-----------

You are a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and have just been asked by the future Worthy Grand Matron to serve as her Grand Historian for the year.  You think, what is a Grand Historian, but you know you can call the present Grand Historian and find out what your duties are.  She assures you that it is a pleasant thing to do for Grand Chapter. She tells you to draw up a letter asking each Chapter to send you their Chapter history on a form you have enclosed with your letter.  She tells you to send your letter to your Worthy Grand Matron and have her approve the letter and forward to the Grand Secretary for mailings to the individual Chapters. If you are lucky, you will get about one half of our Chapters to reply, which you will file in their individual folders.   You will carry a camera with you wherever you go, as there is a special book for the Worthy Grand Matron, which should reflect her year in pictures.  The present Grand Historian also tells you not to count on anyone, including Grand Officers, to willingly share their pictures with you.  She also tells you that there are eight files measuring 11 inches by 10 inches by 12 inches deep, weighing an average of 18 pounds per file.  There are 3 files for inactive chapter histories and five files for active Chapters.  The Grand Chapter file measures 20.5 inches by 15 inches by 13 inches deep and weighs an even 42 pounds.  This file is full.  The last Grand Matrons history stored in it is Marilyn Hoots. The present Historian will tell you that she is able to transport the files in her Buick Regal sedan by placing the Grand Chapter file and three other files in her trunk and the other five files in the back seat of her car, by moving the passenger front seat as far forward as possible.  There is absolutely no room for the new grand chapter file.  So, if you are asked to accept this position, remember you must transport these items to and from your home at the end of your year.  You must also be ready to accept such items as chapter ode cards, installation programs, honor night programs, reception programs and whatever the Chapter sends you.  Some Chapters are “overdoing” this, making the files full and requiring more room to handle their records.  The records originally had only a page with their years Chapter history on it---------.  You say that we are supposed to receive a monetary amount for the year.  I do not know if you file for it or not.  I have not requested or received any money for either time I was Historian.  If it were to be offered to me I would suggest it go to the Worthy Grand Matrons project.  I do suggest you put your imagination to work, and figure out a way to transport these file to and from the Historians home.  Yes, you will stand when asked for Grand Chapter Committee Members present please stand.  No, your Chapter does not recognize you with an Honor Night---remember you are a Committee Member.  Enjoy it, when asked to be a Historian.  I have.

Such an uplifting story ... please check it out!
The little guy in my class is still hanging in there, despite his health issues. Here is a link to pictures of Shaun and his visit to the Seahawks Training Camp. Pretty cool pictures!  Shaun went into Hospice care at Christmas but still attends school 4 mornings a week and has a full-time nurse with him when he is at school.  We continue to learn about life from Shaun every day!

A Mother's Day Tribute... The Meanest Mother In The World

I had the meanest mother in the whole world!  While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs, or toast.  When others had cake and sodas for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich with a glass of milk.  And, as you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids, too!  My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.  My mother insisted upon knowing where we kids were at all times.  You would think we were on a chain gang.  She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing.  She insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour that we'd be gone and hour or less; not one hour and one minute.  I am really ashamed to admit it, but she actually struck us, not once, but each time we did as we pleased.  Can you imagine actually hitting a child just because he disobeyed?  Now you can begin to see how mean she really was.  The worst is yet to come!  We had to be in bed by nine each night and up early the next morning.  We couldn't sleep until noon like our friends.  So while they slept, my mother actually had the nerve to break the child labor law.  She made us work.  We had to wash dishes, make beds, learn to cook, and all sorts of new, cruel things.
I believe she stayed awake every night thinking up more mean things to do to us.  She always insisted upon our telling the truth, and the whole truth and nothing but the truth, even if it killed us -- and it nearly did!
By the time we were teenagers, she was much meaner (and wiser), and our lives became even more unbearable.  None of this tooting the horn of a car in front of the house for us to come running.  She embarrassed us to no end by making our dates and friends come to the door to get us.
I forgot to mention, while my friends were dating at the "mature age" of twelve and thirteen, my old-fashioned mother refused to let us date until the age of fifteen or sixteen.  Fifteen, that is, if you dated only to go to school functions, and that was twice a year.
My mother was a complete failure as a mother!  None of us has ever been arrested or beaten by his mate.  Each of my brothers served his time in the service of his country.  And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out?
You are right, our mean mother!  Look at all those things we missed -- we never go to march in protest parades, nor take part in a riot, burn our draft cards or our country's flag, and a million and one things that our friends did.  She forced us to grow into God-fearing, educated, honest adults!
Using this as a background, I am trying to raise my three children.  I stand a little taller, and I am filled with pride when my children call me "mean."  Because you see, I thank God he gave me the meanest mother in the whole world!

LOWRY'S HINTS

HINT 1 - Broiling: Add one cup of water to the bottom portion of the broiling pan before putting it in the oven. The water will absorb the smoke and grease and make the food more tender.
            * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 2 -  Fresh Eggs: To test to see if an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. If it sinks, it's fresh. If it floats, throw it away!!
            * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 3: Before mowing your lawn, spray the underside of your mower with cooking spray to keep grass clippings from sticking.  A build-up of debris can
prevent the mower from cutting properly and encourage rust.
            * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 4:  Tip for stamp collectors: Place the envelope in the freezer for a few hours. You'll then be able to easily lift the stamps off with a pair of tweezers

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

Topping:
1 cup of firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 can (20 oz) of pineapple slices

Cake:
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
6 Tbsp cake flour
6 Tbsp of ground almonds (from about 2 oz of whole almonds)
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cups of sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature
4 large eggs
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup sour cream

1) - Start by making the caramel topping. Take brown sugar and butter and combine and melt in a saucepan on medium heat until sugar dissolves and the mixture is bubbly, this should take several minutes. Pour mixture into a 10 inch diameter stick-free cake pan with 2 inch high sides. Arrange pineapple slices in a single layer
on top of the caramel mixture.
2) - Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Whisk the flours, almonds, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the sugar and butter together until light. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in the vanilla. Add dry ingredients alternately with sour cream in 2 additions each, beating well after each addition. Pour cake batter over caramel and pineapple in pan.
3) - Bake cake until tester inserted into the center comes out clean, about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Cool cake in pan on a rack for 10 minutes. Turn cake out onto a platter. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Makes 12 to 14 servings.

Banana Tres Leches Dessert
Tres Leches cake is the Hispanic-influenced dessert showing up on restaurant dessert menus. Soaked in three sweet milks, this version boasts using a foolproof Betty Crocker® cake mix to make it easy.

1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® white cake mix
1 1/4 cups water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 cup mashed bananas (2 medium)
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
1/2 cup (from 14-oz can) coconut milk (not cream of coconut)
1/2 cup whipping cream
1 container Betty Crocker® Whipped fluffy white frosting
Banana slices and/or toasted coconut, if desired

1. Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease bottom only of 13x9-inch pan with shortening or cooking spray.
2. In large bowl, beat cake mix, water, oil, eggs and mashed bananas with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds; beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pan.
3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour.
4. Poke top of cake every 1/2 inch with long-tined fork, wiping fork occasionally to reduce sticking. In large bowl, stir together condensed milk, coconut milk and whipping cream. Carefully pour evenly over top of cake. Cover; refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight until mixture is absorbed into cake.
5. Spread frosting over cake. Garnish each serving with banana slices and/or toasted coconut, if desired. Store covered in refrigerator.

JOKES

Negotiations between union members and their employer were at an impasse. The union denied that their workers were flagrantly abusing their contract's sick-leave provisions.
One morning at the bargaining table, the company's chief negotiator held aloft the morning edition of the newspaper, "This man," he announced, "Called in Sick yesterday!"
There on the sports page, was a photo of the supposedly ill employee, who had just won a local golf tournament with an excellent score.
The silence in the room was broken by a union negotiator.
"Wow," he said. "Think of what kind of score he could have had if he hadn't been sick!"

When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take
care of first, the truck, the car, playing golf, the house, always something more important to me.
Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, when you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway.
The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.
Moral to this story: Marriage is a relationship, in which one person is always right, and the other is the husband.

When I went with my daughter to visit a prestigious university, our student guide pointed out the nationally ranked library and state-of-the-art science facilities. She told us that the professors were the best in the world, and she recommended my daughter apply early to improve her chances for admission.
"We get so many applicants," she boasted, "because of the stature of the school."
After the tour I asked our guide, "So, why did you choose this school?"
"Oh," she replied matter-of-factly, "my boyfriend goes here."

  • What is a Closeout Sale?  A closeout sale focuses on manufacturers that are offering discontinued lines to retailers at large discounts and they are passed on to the consumer. If appliances or electronics are in the sale, you might have trouble finding spare parts.

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY

Good Evening ... Will get this sent out with the latest news!  Such an exciting time of year for Sister Marjoe and Brother Phil.  I was reminded last evening by WGP Terry that it was exactly a year ago tomorrow that I was announced!  WOW!  Time passes fast when you are having fun, boy howdy!
We have spent the entire day in Coeur d'Alene and Spokane ... and I am ready for bed!
You notice that there are a few more reminders?  I received Ode Cards this week from Don Beck (Analia Chapter); and Kathy McCurdy (Cedar Chapter).
Until next time ... Hearty Patriot Hugs and happy thoughts.
