Autumn leaf

If I were a leaf on a majestic tall tree,
And I had the choice, of which I could be,
I’d be a maple to turn orange yellow gold
When the cool autumn winds turned warm nights cold.

I’d want to be high as high could be,
So all of the world would be open to me.
I’d sway with the wind, spring, summer and fall
Up in the maple so big and so tall.

Then one moonlit night in October’s cold air,
A beautiful frost would come paint me with care.
All leaves would turn color, as God would have done
To give the world beauty for short days to come.

Then if I could choose on which day I would fall
I pick late October when winds came to call.
I’d choose Sunday morning so bright and sunny,
As sun through the leaves flowed golden as honey.

I’d pick the sweet moment, when the wind was just right
To let go of my limb and float nice and light
Drifting ever so calmly from the place of my birth,
Then gently lie down to my rest here on earth.

MESSAGE FROM OUR WORTHY GRAND MATRON

IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT MARTHA CHAPTER OFFICIAL VISIT OF OCTOBER 22ND

Due to the sad passing of Jane Henson, Worthy Matron of Martha Chapter, I have changed the date of their Chapter's Official Visit to Monday, November 12th.  This will be in the evening following the OV at White Rose Chapter that afternoon.

I felt that Martha Chapter has been heavily impacted by Jane's passing.  They will still have the Reception for Grand Adah as planned, but I wanted them to have a breather before holding another event.

Our love and prayers go out to Brother Tom Henson who is the Worthy Patron, and to all the members of Martha Chapter during this difficult time.

 HUGS,

** Marjoe Richards, Worthy Grand Matron

ANOTHER MESSAGE FROM OUR WORTHY GRAND MATRON

To all members:
If you are planning to attend the BOW event in Richmond, British Columbia, do NOT send your dinner reservations to the BC&Y contact shown on the
published information.  Send your reservation and payment to Bev Baller, Maple Leaf Chapter who is the Washington contact person.  If mailed to BC, it won't
get there in time.  I would suggest that you call Bev with your reservation as deadlines are fast approaching.  This is a fun event with our Sisters and
Brothers of BC & Yukon and Oregon.  I hope that we will have many of our Washington members sharing is this social time.
HUGS,
** Marjoe Richards, Worthy Grand Matron of Washington

New Insults, Please
Call someone a weasel, and that person will take offense. But the remark could be a compliment, too.
For one thing, weasels are among the most flexible creatures on the planet, and flexibility is a plus, right? With weasels it's their spines that are especially bendable -- so bendable, in fact, that the average weasel can make a U-turn in the narrow confines of a gopher's burrow.
Also, weasels are not finicky when it comes to food. Nor do they play favorites. The Long-tailed Weasel, for instance, preys on rabbits, chipmunks, shrews, rats, birds . . . even insects and earthworms when the mood strikes.
And finally, contrary to myth, weasels don't suck the blood of their victims. They merely lick the blood from open wounds.

Sadness in South Carolina ...

It is with a very sad heart that I tell you that Brother Fred Caldwell, PGP, passed away today(10/10) around 3 pm. Brother Bill Burgess, PGP, and I were on our way to the hospital to see Brother Fred but didn't make it before he passed away but we did spend some time with Sister Judy, Sister Kathy and Fred & Judy's son Brett. This is a great loss to our Order as well as to us personally. The tentative arrangements are as follows: Saturday, 10/13, visitation from 7 pm-9 pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Rd, Columbia 29209, (803) 776-1094. Funeral Sunday, 10/14, at 3 pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home. If there is any change in the arrangements, I will let you know.

If  this measure passes it will increase sales taxes  6 cents per $10 purchase for $150.   Annually.  car tabs taxes would increase by $80.00  per
year per $10,000 of vehicle value.

Southgate Chapter News ...
Hi Connie,
Southgate Chapter in Burien needs to get the word out to all our Sisters & Brothers that we have a chair lift in our building that is not working.  Because of this, we are conducting  our  meetings in the dining room.  Our Official Visit is October 15th and we had planned to have a 25 cents/dip potluck dinner prior to the meeting.  We now cannot do this because of having to set up chapter in the dining room.
We are having the honor night for Grand Representative Bob Beebe on November 5th  and will undoubtedly have to also have that meeting in the dining room.  Our dining room is a large room and we will have no problem with seating but we want everyone to be aware that the meetings and refreshments will be in the same room, and we just need the patience of the membership.
We look forward to the attendance of many members at both events.  See you then!!

Message from Amaranth Grand Secretary ...

H.L. Jane Henson, RM Jewel of the Valley Ct. #50 in Spokane, WA.  (and Worthy Matron of Martha Chapter, Cheney!)

Jane was initiated August 12, 1977 in Minnie Selby Ct.#3, Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and affiliated from that Court to Jewel of the Valley Ct 50, which was Jewel Ct #50 at that time, in June 1985.  She was Royal Matron in 1992 while she was still working at Eastern Washington University as a secretary.  She was enjoying her retirement and the opportunity to be more active and RM once again  and this time with her husband.  He had been too ill for several years to be active in our Court and had only been healthy enough for the past few years.  They were enjoying their year and having time to be more active and do a little traveling.  She was Worthy Matron in Cheney and he is Worthy Patron in Martha Chapter as well. They were active in a Masonic Camping group.

They bought a Motor Home, which was easier for Tom.  This past early summer they had made a trip back to Kentucky and other places where they visited family and old friends.  She had mentioned several times a dear friend in Alaska, which she had hoped to visit.  That friend was in "fragile" health, according to Jane.  Things like this make me realize how "fragile" we all are.
She was a great asset to our Amaranth Court and supporter of GC.  She was articulate and poised as our RM.  She always seemed to have the right words to say.  She will be greatly missed as will Lillian C. & John B.  I think Nadine will step up to the plate and carry forward.  I hope that the Court can stay together and we can build the Court.

Thank you for listening.   Esther Auld, Sec., Jewel of the Valley Ct.

Thank you.

I  have received the following two messages from members.  Please keep their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Also thank you for all your prayers for Jewel of the Valley Ct. They had their meeting and are planning a rest stop. They appreciate all the good wishes for their court.

H.L. Joanne Houston:  She is at H.L. Karin Lawson house until this weekend. She is feeling much better and wishes to thank all the members for their calls and cards.

H.L. Ruth Scofield just celebrated her 85th birthday and is feeling much better after her car accident and hospitalization.  The bruising on her arm is  getting better.  She just needs to follow her diabetes diet and eat  regularly.

Also I have just received the Supreme court amendments, so will be working at getting those out to the courts, etc.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE GETTING 'MARVELOUSLY MATURE' WHEN.............
  1. You and your teeth don't sleep together.
  2. Your try to straighten out the wrinkles in your socks and discover you aren't wearing any.
  3. At the breakfast table you hear snap, crackle, pop and you're not eating cereal.
  4. Your back goes out but you stay home.
  5. When you wake up looking like your driver's license picture.
  6. It takes two tries to get up from the couch.
  7. When your idea of a night out is sitting on the patio.
  8. When happy hour is a nap.
  9. When you're on vacation and your energy runs out before your money does.
  10. When you say something to your kids that your mother said to you and you always hated it.
  11. When all you want for your birthday is to not be reminded of your age.
  12. When you step off a curb and look down one more time to make sure the street is still there.
  13. Your idea of weight lifting is standing up.
  14. It takes longer to rest than it did to get tired.
  15. Your memory is shorter and your complaining lasts longer.
  16. Your address book has mostly names that start with Dr.
  17. You sit in a rocking chair and can't get it going.
  18. The pharmacist has become your new best friend.
  19. Getting "lucky" means you found your car in the parking lot.
  20. The twinkle in your eye is merely a reflection from the sun on your bifocals.
  21. It takes twice as long - to look half as good.
  22. Everything hurts, and what doesn't hurt - doesn't work.
  23. You look for your glasses for half an hour and they were on your head the whole time.
  24. You sink your teeth into a steak - and they stay there.
  25. You give up all your bad habits and still don't feel good.
  26. You have more patience, but it is actually that you just don't care anymore.
  27. You finally get your head together and your body starts falling apart.
  28. You wonder how you could be over the hill when you don't even remember being on top of it.

Re:  GM'S Visit to VA Hospital ...

Brethren all,
There has been some discussion as to whether, or not, there will be a BBQ at the conclusion of the Grand Master's visit to the VA Hospital the day of October 24th in Spokane.  I just received a call from WB Jerry Gendreau, Worshipful Master of Deer Park Lodge #134, and the MSA Hospital Visitation representative.  He advises me that there will only be cookies and coffee.

Important news ...
Brethren, we have been asked to remind you - if you are planning to attend the District Meeting on Friday October 26 - to consider bringing a new, unwrapped toy, or a cash contribution for Toys for Tots.
Thanks in advance for your thoughtfulness, support,  and consideration of this wonderful and worthwhile project of the United States Marine Corps.
See you in a couple weeks at Audubon Park Lodge.

Long Range Planning Workshop
Brethren - Audubon Park Lodge #272 will host a Long Range Planning Workshop on Thursday, October 25, beginning at 6:00 p.m. We plan to be finished not later than 9:30 p.m.
Yes, we know that's the night of the North Hill Spaghetti Feed, but if you get to North Hill early you can eat and still make it over to Audubon Park Lodge in time for the start of the Planning Workshop. After all, it's only about a 10 minute drive!
We plan to have a general session and then break into two groups:
1 - Those which have started on a plan, and
        2 - Those that haven't.
It is VITALLY important that all elected Lodge officers attend this session.  Successful Lodges have a plan, those that don't - AREN'T as successful.
More details will follow - but PLEASE plan to be in attendance.
Fraternally,
** VW Chuck Young

Special thoughts needed ...

You may be aware that Bro. Carl Smith, (Past Grand Master), is undergong some rough moments.  He has hepatitis and is under treatment at the present.  He has two more weeks of treatment left.

The treatments are leaving him in a weakened condition and it has been most difficult for him to do the things Masonic that he enjoys so much.

His spirits need some uplifting.  Perhaps a card, or a phone call or a e-mail would help him overcome his state of mind and serve him to know that he is missed and has support from his Brothers.

    His phone is 360.387.4357.

Address is: 1592 S. Poplar Lane, Camano Island, WA 98292-7628

e-mail is:  umpire@wavecable.com.

    Thanks.
** MWB Jim Vannice, Past Grand Master

LOWRY'S HINTS
  • HINT 1 -  If your dishwasher is suffering from mineral deposits don't worry, just pour a container of Tang Drink Mix and run the dishwasher. (Of course
    without dishes for this load)

  • HINT 2:  To sharpen the blades on your coffee grinder simply grind a cup or so of rice in your grinder. Your blades will sharpen instantly.

  • HINT 3: Brighter Whites? Soften Your Water:  The minerals in hard water can gray clothes. If you have very hard water, add 1/2 cup of vinegar to your rinse water.

  • HINT 4: If You don't Have Hard Water...try this And if you don't have hard water, use the might of minerals in your wash  cycle. Add 1/2 cup borax or washing soda (both are available in the laundry  section of your supermarket) to a medium load of laundry.

  • HINT 5:  I discovered a helpful hint if you cut your family's hair at home. Sprinkle cornstarch on the person's neck before starting and the hair won't stick and cause that awful itch!

  • HINT 6:  To get rid of roach's, Place Bay leaves all around in your cupboards and floor's! You won't see any the next day, or for years to come!!

JOKES

An Engineering Student, a Physics Student, and a Mathematics student were each given $150 dollars and were told to use that money to find out exactly how tall a particular hotel was.
All three ran off, extremely keen on how to do this. The physics student went out, purchased some stopwatches, a number of ball bearings, a calculator, and some friends. He had them all time the drop of ball bearings from the roof, and he then figured out the height from the time it took for the bearings to accelerate from rest until they impacted with the sidewalk.
The math student waited until the sun was going down, then she took out her protractor, plumb line, measuring tape, and scratch pad, measured the length of the shadow, found the angle the buildings roof made from the ground, and used trigonometry to figure out the height of the building.
Of course, with all that was involved in getting this experiment done, they were up plenty late studying for other courses' exams. These two students bumped into the engineering student the next day, who looked quite refreshed. When asked what he did to find the height of the building he replied: "Well, I walked up to the bell hop, gave him 10 bucks, asked him how tall the hotel was, and went inside for supper!"

A man enters a barbershop for a shave. While the barber is foaming him up, he mentions the problems he has getting a close shave around the cheeks.
"I have just the thing," says the barber taking a small wooden ball from a nearby drawer. "Just place this between your cheek and gum." The client places the ball in his mouth and the barber proceeds with the closest shave the man has ever experienced. After a few strokes, the client asks in garbled speech, "And what if I swallow it?"
"No problem," says the barber. "Just bring it back tomorrow like everyone else does."

Bill was a frequent user of a pay telephone at a popular truck stop, and was greatly inconvenienced when the phone went out of commission.
Repeated requests for repair brought only promises.
After several days, Bill again contacted the phone company and told them there was no longer a rush. The phone was now working fine... except that all money was being returned upon completion of each call.
A repairman arrived within the hour!

HELOISE
  • Getting Pet Hair Off Furniture:  When you see hair on furniture, wipe a lightly dampened sponge over it to lift off or swipe over it with the clean rubber bottom (sole) of a sneaker to pull up hair. You also can roll a couple of lengths of tape around your hand (sticky side out) to pick up hair.
  • Removing Stains When Eating Out:  If you notice a spot on a garment while you are in a restaurant or hotel, dampen a cloth napkin with water and dab at the stain. Some liquid hand soaps in restaurant bathrooms and hotel shampoos can be used to quick-clean a spill.
  • Ants Gotten into Houseplants Soil? If you discover lots of ants crawling around in potted plants and want to get rid of them, very slowly put each pot into water, which will cause the ants to move higher in the soil, and then they will drown.
  • To Prevent Silver From Tarnishing:  Store clean silver in washed cotton, acid-free tissue or other bags specially designed to protect silver (these can be found at hardware and home improvement stores). They really do the job.

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY

And now the saga will continue ... our trip to South Dakota ... which has been awhile ago so I will have to depend greatly on my 'grey' matter!     We met up with my brother in Coeur d'Alene, ID and after having breakfast at Elmer's, we headed out ... Ted and I in the lead cuz we had the navigation system (which, I found out, needed to be changed when we hit MT due to programming.)  The first night we stayed in a park that left a lot to be desired ... in Deer Lodge, MT.  They did offer cable TV however for $2 more a night.  Hey!  We decided to splurge.  The next morning was beautiful ... frost on everything!  After breakfast we toured the Old Montana Prison in Deer Lake.  'Bands of outlaws and Vigilantes roamed early Montana Territory leaving a path of destruction and death.  In an attempt to tame the Wild West, a prison was established in Deer Lodge in 1871.  Constructed primarily with convict labor, Old Montana Prison was an active prison until 1979 when it was moved to a new site four miles west of town.'  The book that was given to us also stated that prison crews built 500 miles of road at Flathead Lake, MacDonald Pass, most of the roads around Deer Lodge, and roads in other counties throughout the state.  Inmates also built eleven buildings at Warm Springs (Montana State Hospital) and four buildings at Galen (Montana TB Sanitarium).  Warden Frank Conley believed in working the inmates!  (Nothing wrong with that!!!!)  The Warden saw that the prison needed the necessary funds to make essential improvements and it help curb discipline problems.  In 1916, 50% of all inmates worked and lived outside the prison wall!  On April 16, 1959, Jerry Myles and Lee Smart led 12 inmates in a riot, killing the Deputy Warden.  The two men took 18 prison employees and 5 stool pigeon inmates as hostages, soaked rags with flammable liquid and threatened to burn them alive.  After 36 hours, the National Guard fired a bazooka at the tower where the ringleaders were headquartered as a team of men freed the hostages.  Myles and Smart were found dead of an apparent murder-suicide.  Although the riot focused attention on the overcrowded conditions at the prison, it was another 20 years before the last prisoners were finally moved to the new prison!  When Ted was growing up, he heard that if anyone 'messed' up, they would be sent to Walla Walla ... the most dreaded prison that was known to man in the area in which he grew up (North Carolina!)  I think this Montana Prison was something to behold, too!  WOW!

Second night we stayed in a fabulous KOA in Billings!  We had a swing on the patio, our own potted plants!  What an improvement from the night before.  Didn't get to spend much time there as it was off to Rapid City, which we hit after dark!  Our campground there was a mite better than the first one!  We found out that regular gas was about 85 Octane ... so had to pay more to get the 87 that is required in our rig or higher.  What a gimmick!  We only lost my brother once ... when he was headed to Cheyenne and we weren't!  He said he saw us go by ... on another highway!  Thank goodness for cell phones ... although ours (Verizon) wouldn't work in MT, WY, or SD.  Thank goodness my brother had an extra one.

Next issue?  Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, and all points between.  Bored?  Just delete!

And to quote Sharon in her news:  Thought for the day:  It's alright to sit on your pity pot every now and again. Just be sure to flush when you are done.

Until next time ...Hearty Patriot Hugs, happy thoughts and may God Bless you all!
