THANKSGIVING PRAYER

by Stella Craft Tremble

As autumn ends with bursting bins of grain,

And winter starts his alabaster reign,

We gleaners put the harvest plow away

And humbly pause to bow our heads and pray.

We thank Thee for crops ripened in the bun,

For full land founded on Thy benison (blessing),

We thank Thee for the vintage of the plains;

For sun and soil and fields of golden grain.

For men who braved the dangers of the sea

In valiant search of peace and liberty,

We, born with faith of sturdy pioneers,

Must face and vanquish modern nuclear fears.

We thank Thee for Thy strong protective hand,

And humbly pray, 'God bless our native land.'

We turn to Thee in prayer, lest we forget

We need your help ... we are but pilgrims yet!

We pray 'Let there be a world of Thanksgiving,

And lasting peace, and bread for all the living.'

Worthy Grand Patron Phil's History of OES

Quoting Brother Phil:

Our Beginning ...

I was doing some reading the other day and came across this article on the history of Eastern Star, which I would like to share with you. The history of Eastern Star is divided into 3 eras. The first extended from 1850 t0 1866under the leadership of D r. Rob Morris. The second era extended from 1860to 1876 under the leadership of Robert McCoy. The third era extends from1876 when the General Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star was established to the present time. The real origin of the Eastern Star, like Masonry, will always be shrouded in mystery. Many researchers believe it had a French origin as early as 1703.By some, this is claimed to be the first inception of 'Female Masonry' or Masonry for both male and female members. There appeared to be a demand for side degrees for ladies during this time and quite a list sprang up. Such as Heroines of Jericho, Danger in the Dark, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, etc. These were extensively used but soon fell into decay, for lack of lasting worth. As to the real origin of Eastern Star Degrees in its initiatory form, there is not the least doubt that that honor belongs to Dr. Morris. Dr. Morris felt that Masonry should be for the whole family. But knowing that he could not change the Ancient Landmarks of Masonry, he sought some method by which women could share with the Masonic Brother the same inspiration that prompts man to noble deeds. Although he harbored these feelings for years, it was not until after he developed the Eastern Star Degrees in their present initiatory form, that he developed the floor plans and corps of officers. He then conferred the degrees upon his wife and daughters and some neighbors. Presumably having an idea to clothe the ladies with certain words or signs whereby they might make themselves known to Master Masons. These signs and so called mysteries of the Order were communicated freely to all Master Masons and their relatives. Thus our beloved Order was started.

(To be continued ...)

Note from Worthy Grand Esther...

Hi there everyone,

Dave and I have for some years now been working with the Director of Flight93 Chapel, Father Al Mascherino in Shanksville, Pennsylvania both on his website and in support of his work at the Chapel solemn grounds and memorials for those who perished on September 11th.Hehas personally devoted his life and all of his own worldly goods to the preservation and display of these memorials. There is no funding for the projects other than personal donations or sales of items in the gift shop on site and online.

And so, Father Al is compiling recipes to print a recipe book for fundraising for the Chapel and grounds. I told him that NO ONE can cook like our OES and Masonic Fraternity members allover the world. He is looking for time tested diverse recipes of all origins and ethnicities. Please go to the link below and participate. Be sure to click on OES as it asks you where you heard about this project, so Father Al knows who you are.

I appreciate in advance your participation in this endeavor. Of course if you cannot participate or chose not to that is okay too. Please peruse the website and sign the guestbook. The cut off date for receipt of recipes is Mar 31st. The plan is that the cookbook would be available for sale sometime in June.

Please pass this onto members of the Fraternity in your area.

With Fraternal Love and Bear Hugs, Linda

Masonic license plates...

Do you have a Masonic Family license plate on your car?

The following appeared in the latest Denver Consistory Newsletter:

"Brethren, we were notified early this year that a number of Colorado license plates termed' group special' would be terminated on June 30, 2007, if groups did not reach3,000 in use. The Masonic Family plate is one of these and as of that date there were only 1721 Masonic Family plates in use.
However, we have been given an extension from the 6/30/07 date and the NEW deadline is February 29,2008 to reach the 3000 number. As of 8/31/07 there were 1751 Masonic Family plates issued."
These unique license plates are available to anyone in the Masonic Family, not just Masons. If the minimum is not met by the 2/29/08 deadline, the state will stop issuing them and also stop renewing those currently issued and they will disappear from our streets. That would be a shame. We're all proud of our Masonic Family membership and displaying these plates shows our pride. You can get these plates at anytime, not just at renewal. Your county clerk will prorate the fees based on the time left until your next renewal.
Please help save our Masonic Family license plates by getting yours today.
Fraternally,
**Larry Wullbrandt, PGP/GGCCM, WP-Manzanita 85,Littleton, CO

My sentiments exactly! As you all know .. we, in WA state, have our own Masonic License Plates and apparently many of you are not proud to be associated with the Masonic Fraternity as you are not 'sporting' one of these 'cool' license plates which in turn supports a worth-while cause. Most everything we own has a Masonic License Plate! If lawn tractors needed a license plate, I am sure it would have one, too! And now another message from today:

After receiving several replies regarding persons inability to purchase these plates, I made some phone calls and what I learned was not encouraging.
My County Clerks office and the Colorado State Motor Vehicle Registration office both told me that one must have either a Masonic Lodge Dues card or a Masonic Family ID card to get the Masonic Family plate. I've heard that some County Clerks will accept a Shrine dues card, but any man with a Shrine card should also have a Lodge card. I've also heard instances where a Masonic Lodge dues card was not accepted.
Since a "Masonic Family ID card' does not exist in Colorado, my opinion is that the ladies of OES, Amaranth, etc., and the youth organizations are out of luck regarding the plates. The plate may say "Masonic Family" but the State apparently doesn't recognize all the bodies who make up the Masonic family.
It appears to me that when this program started, no one in the Masonic hierarchy specified all the Masonic family organizations who should have been eligible for the plate or possibly the State bureaucracy prefers that the plate just go away. Whatever the reason, it's a loss to each
of us.
I have attempted to contact the author of the article that I quoted in my previous e-mail on this subject, but he is out of town until next week. I will follow up with him, but at this point, my feeling is this plate, distinctive to our Masonic Family, will disappear from the streets of Colorado in the near future.
Those who presently have a Masonic Family license plate should hang onto them as a memento of better times.
Wish I had better news to relay.
Fraternally,
** Larry Wullbrandt, PGP/GGCCM, WP-Manzanita 85,Littleton,CO

Quantity recipes ...

I have used the book at the Girl Scout camp many times, but since I don't have access to it any more, I found a web site the other day that was helpful. www.ellenskitchen.com.
I don't remember who brought up this subject, but our chapter provided refreshment for our Lodge for years. We just took them there and it was on the honor system that each one would contribute if they ate. It got so that we would send for 12-15 and we might get $5.00 and we have so few Sister's now to do it, that we have stopped. I figured that if it was all gone, they ate until they cleaned the plate and were satisfied and if there were leftovers or the container was gone, someone took them home. We do have one Chapter member who is a single Mason and he would often volunteer to supply the refreshments. If they don't complain or comment about not having enough, then assume they are satisfied.
I hope that everyone in the USA has a very Happy Thanksgiving and be well and most of all travel safe.

Hi Connie,

It is good to hear that you are feeling better. When you called me you sounded so horrible that I was wondering how long it would be before you got well again. I would appreciate it very much if you could please put this note in your next issue of the Stars.

Bad Virus...

This one is real. I checked it on Snopes.

BAD Virus --CNN announced -- Snopes confirms as real. Here is a link to the snopespage: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST!!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee . This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.
This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title: 'You've received a Post Card from a Family member'.

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself.

So don't open any mails with subject:' A Post Card from.' As soon as you get the mail, delete it!! Even if you know the sender!!! Please pass this mail to all of your friends. Forward this to everyone in your address book. I'm sure most people, like myself, would rather receive this notice 25 times than not at all!

Hmmm...

Although Thanksgiving is a holiday that typically involves abundance, most of us don’t want or need more “abundance” on our waistlines. On Thanksgiving Day, the average American eats between 2,000 and 4,500 calories, which is a significant jump from the 1,600 to 2,400 calories that are consumed on a typical day.
Calorie laden feasts of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie can sabotage your good intentions to watch the calories. But with a little adjustment to the ingredients, your Thanksgiving feast can include traditional foods that have all the delicious taste, but far fewer calories.
For a lower fat turkey, make sure you select one that isn’t self-basting so you can avoid the extra fat. Many store-bought turkeys contain antibiotics. Organic varieties are raised humanely and without the additives, are available in health food stores. Stuff the turkey cavity with whole or halved onions, halved lemons or apples and sprigs of fresh herbs such as sage, marjoram, thyme and rosemary. Instead of rubbing the skin with butter or oil, spray it with an oil spray and season it with salt and pepper. If you are hosting a small gathering, consider buying a turkey breast instead of the whole bird, as breast meat is lower in calories than dark meat.

Most people include gravy in their Thanksgiving menus and it is one of the biggest calorie culprits on the table. Try using vegetable oil instead of turkey drippings when making the gravy. Better yet, make a low-fat broth-based gravy or vegetarian gravy.
Here are some other tips to help you avoid the nutritional hazards of Turkey Day:

Start a family tradition of taking a walk together after the Thanksgiving meal. This will help digestion and will get your metabolism in gear so you can burn some of the calories you consumed. It also provides quality time to visit with relatives and build happy memories that don’t revolve around food. And healthy traditions are something to be thankful for!

Remember this email from last week re: Christmas Cards?

The following excerpt is from the Walter Reed website and lists other sites devoted to troop support.
Holiday Cards to Wounded and Recovering Soldiers
Walter Reed Army Medical Center officials want to remind those individuals who want to show their appreciation through mail to include packages, letters, and holiday cards addressed to 'Any Wounded Soldier' or 'A Recovering American Soldier' that Walter Reed cannot accept these packages in support of the decision by then Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Transportation Policy in 2001. This decision was made to ensure the safety and well being of
patients and staff at medical centers throughout the Department of Defense.
In addition, the U.S. Postal Service is no longer accepting "Any Service Member" or "A Recovering American Soldier" letters or packages. Mail to "Any Service Member" that is deposited into a collection box will not be delivered.
Instead of sending an "Any Wounded Soldier" letter or package to Walter Reed, please consider making a donation to one of the more than 300 nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping our troops and their families listed on the "America Supports You" website www.americasupportsyou.mil
Other organizations that offer means of showing your support for our troops or assist wounded service members and their families include:
http://www.usocares.org/
http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/tooursoldiers/
http://www.redcross.org

For individuals without computer access, your local military installation, the local National Guard or military reserve unit in your area may offer the best alternative to show your support to our returning troops and their families. Walter Reed Army Medical Center will continue to receive process and deliver all mail that is addressed to a specific individual. As Walter Reed continues to enhance the medical care and processes for our returning service members, it must also keep our patients and staff members’ safe while following Department of Defense policy. The outpouring of encouragement from the general public, corporate America and civic groups through out the past year has been incredible. Our Warriors in Transition are amazed at the thanks and support they receive from their countrymen.

INSPIRATIONAL REFERENCE

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever…to the One who remembered us in our low estate, His love endures forever. And freed us from our enemies, His love endures forever.—The Bible,Psalm136:1-3, 23-24(NIV)

Presidential Quote …

That from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God, and that government of the people by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.— Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address, November 19, 1863

TENNESSEE TEN COMMANDMENTS

(Maybe this is the way to teach the 10 Commandments today!? Maybe then people would "get it" and it wouldn't be construed as 'religioused'.)

Some people in Tennessee have trouble with all those "shalls" and "shall nots" in the Ten commandments. Folks just aren't used to talking in those terms. So, some folks in middle Tennessee got together and translated the "King James" into "Jackson County" language....no joke, read on...
The Hillbilly's Ten Commandments (posted on the wall at Cross Trails Church in Gainesboro, TN.)

1.     Just one God

2.     Honor yer Ma&Pa

3.     No tellin' tales or gossipin'

4.     Git yourself to Sunday meetin'

5.     Put nothin' before God

6.     No foolin' around with another fellow's gal

7.     No killin'

8.     Watch yer mouth

9.     Don' t take what ain't  yers

10.   Don't be hankerin' for yer buddy's  stuff

Now that's kind a plain an' simple, don't ya think?? Y'all have a nice day.

A MASONIC MOMENT

By WB Wally Zink

Grumble and Mumble

Remember some years back to the song that encouraged us to accent the Positive and eliminate the Negative? And it is true for...

There's a family nobody like to meet,

They lived, it is said, on Complaining Street,

In the city of Never-Are-Satisfied,

By the river of Discontent flowing close beside.

They grumble at that and they growl at this,

What ever comes there is always something amiss;

And whether their station be high or be humble,

They are known by the name of Mr. Grumble.,

The weather it is either too hot or it is too cold.

In Winter and Summer alike you hear them scold;

Nothing goes right with the folks they meet

As they stroll down on that gloomy Complaining Street.

They grouse at the rain, they growl at the sun,

In fact their growling is never done.

And the dreadful thin is, if anyone stays,

Among them too long, he will learn all their ways.,

And before he realizes the terrible jumble

He is quickly adopted into the family of Grumble.

So it is far wiser to keep on our feet

From strolling down into Complaining Street.

And never to growl, whatever we do,

Or we will be thought of as Grumblers, too.

Yes, I suppose it is either We accent the Positive, Or We become the Negative!

Out of This World Masonry

On July 20, 1969 I stayed up all night to watch our astronauts land on the moon.

Well, I recently learned that "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" was also a regular upright step for Freemasonry.

Astronaut and Brother Buzz Aldrin was appointed as Special Deputy of the Grand Master of Texas, "granting unto him full power in the premises to represent the Grand Master as such." He was authorized to claim Masonic Territorial Jurisdiction over the moon for the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons on the Moon. Further, he was directed to make due return of his acts. Upon his return to earth, Brother Aldrin certified that the Special Deputation was carried by him to the Moon on July 29, 1969.

Thus was constituted Tranquility Lodge No. 2000, which is under control of the Grand Master and the Trustees of the Grand Lodge of Texas. Membership in Tranquility Lodge No. 2000 is open to all Master Masons in Texas under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Texas, A.F.&A.M., and members in Good Standing of those Grand Lodges that are in Fraternal Communication with the Grand Lodge of Texas (which includes New Hampshire).

THANKSGIVING DAY

When the days grow brisk and nippy,

And the sky is streaked with gray;

And old Halloween is over,

And November's on the way.

You will see folks stop and ponder,

And then you'll hear them say:

'Well, I just can't realize it!

It's almost Thanksgiving day!'

Then they rush to make a fruitcake,

And get out their choicest jam,

And make plans to roast a turkey

And perhaps also a ham.

They have salads, they have pickles,

Fluffy cream on pumpkin pie;

And they eat these lovely mixtures

And the next day nearly die!

Yes, we watch this same performance

Every year, and think: 'Gee-whiz!

Do half the people really know

What day Thanksgiving is?'

Before it is too late,

That Thanksgiving is not a day

Just set aside to dissipate.,

But that each Thanksgiving morning,
We should rustle out of bed,

And should never put our shoes on

Till our prayers of Thanks are  said.

Think of all the little pleasures

And the good things we have had,

Ask for help to bear the heartaches

And to just forget the bad.

Oh, if folks would think about it,

Think of this one day as 'His,'

Realize, way down deep within them,

Just what day Thanksgiving is.

It would sort of bring a feeling,
Glad and peaceful, free of fear,

That Thanksgiving is the best

And biggest day of all the year!

Tips of the Day:

JOKES

The Jewish Chronicle had heard that Benny was coming up to his 110th birthday so they sent one of their reporters to interview him.
"How do you account for your longevity?" asked the reporter.
"You could say that I am a health nut," Benny answered. "I have never smoked or drunk alcohol, I am always in bed by ten o'clock, I've been going to Israeli folk dance classes since I was a teenager and I've always walked three miles a day, even in rain or snow."
"But," said the reporter, "my uncle Saul followed exactly the same routine and he died when he was 75. So how come it didn't work for him?"
"All I can say," replied Benny "is that he didn't keep it up long enough."

A man was driving down a country road in the middle of dairy farm country when his car stalled inexplicably. He got out and raised the hood to see if he could find out what had happened.

A brown and white cow slowly lumbered from the field she had been grazing in over to the car and stuck her head under the hood beside the man.

After a moment the cow looked at the man and said, "Looks like a bad carburetor to me." Then she walked back into the field and began grazing again.

Amazed, the man walked back to the farmhouse he had just passed, where he met a farmer. "Hey, mister, is that your cow in the field?" he asked.

The farmer replied, "The brown and white one? Yep, that's old Bessie."
The man then said, "Well my car's broken down, and she just said, 'Looks like a bad carburetor to me.'"
The farmer shook his head and said, "Don't mind old Bessie, son. She don't know a thing about cars."

HELOISE

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY

Well, Thanksgiving is knocking on the door and am I ready? NO!!! Good thing it is just family cuz I am going to be a bit laid back! I WANT to get my pies baked as well as some rolls this afternoon so this will be short and sweet! I can hear you sigh from here. We did have a bit of problem last evening when we returned home from Spokane. Our furnace wasn't running and it was freezing in here!(69° ... which is a bit higher than freezing I will admit!) After calling every electrician in Newport and even the company in Spokane which installed it (can't come until next Monday ...), we finally found someone at 3:30 PM who gets$65/hour and time and a half AFTER 5 PM. Yip! You are right. It took him an hour to get here and then came without the part we needed and had to return to Newport ... and then time&a half! And the part? We found it locally for $10 each and this company charged us $69 for it. Well guess who ISN'T getting anymore of our business. But I got ta admit. It sure is nice and warm in here.

To quote Dianna in her Cyber Chat: Hold a true friend with both your hands. Don’t let them slip away.

And now as Thanksgiving quickly approaches, let us all give thanks for our troops, praising God for their dedicated service as they protect our freedoms. Pray that those who will celebrate the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays away from their families shall be strengthened and comforted by our Precious God.

... the pumpkin pie awaits! Will make one regular one and one SKINNY one (low fat; which in turn will be low in taste, I am sure) LOL! Have a great Thanksgiving!

Until next time ... Hearty Patriot Hugs, happy thoughts and may God Bless you all!
