A Winter Prelude

(Makes no sense as a poem ... but one can relate ...)

The countryside is peaceful now

Beneath the snowy arena

On this January day

Nature bestows its vibrant dreams.

Nurturing the tender nodes

That are anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring

To burst forth in glorious bloom

With the aid of my aching back and hoe

What beauty Nature bestows with my willing help.

NEW GRAND REPRESENTATIVE

10:44 PM, Thursday ... Dennis and I are just returning home from Pyramid Chapter, where I was honored to give the commission of BC & Yukon to Lew Vogel, who is a most deserving member.
Diane your coasters came in very handy, I brought Laura up to the front and told her what a nice reception you had, showed her your table decoration (which I am putting in the mail tomorrow to your chairman), and gave her a coaster and Lew is Sentinel, and was sitting in the back...and I said, but Lew's has something just a little more than yours - I had pinned his pin on the coaster. It was very well received so, we were glad we were able to present it to him. It would have been sweet had they been at your reception last week, but then I would not have had any props...so thank you very much.
There was one PGM, myself and 2 current grand representatives and   10 former grand representatives. Bill Barquist (the former representative) came down from Ferndale and relinquished all his tartan to Lew. Alice Hammontree and Jeannette Turner were also there. So, it was a very fun evening.

Subject: Fw: Symantec Warns of New Zero-Day Word Attack
We received this message at work from our IT guy so might have some legitimacy.
Importance: High
Hello,
The article listed below states that there is a new virus going around that is sent out through Microsoft Word.  I would like to remind everyone not to open any attachments or emails that you are not expecting or do not know who the sender is.
Thanks,
Muneer

Fri Jan 26, 12:00 PM ET
Hackers are exploiting a new, unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Word that could allow them to take control of a victim's computer, Symantec has warned.
The zero-day vulnerability is the fourth in Microsoft's widely-used Word 2000 software that has not yet been patched, the security company said in its Security Response Warning.
A zero-day vulnerability refers to a security hole for which exploits are already available when it was discovered. This latest one affects most versions of Windows running Word, Symantec's advisory said.
"Extremely Critical"
Danish security vender Secunia ApS also reported the vulnerability, and rated it as "extremely critical," its highest-level warning. Microsoft, however, said the attacks are "very limited."
The attack comes via an infected Word document, a method increasingly used by hackers for targeted attacks. If the document is opened, it installs a Trojan horse program, called Trojan.Mdropper.W, onto the computer, Lau wrote. The Trojan also puts other files on a computer that enable a hacker to control it.
Microsoft released three sets of critical patches on Jan. 9, including ones for Outlook, PowerPoint and Windows, but not for Word.
Word Widely Used
Users can avoid trouble by not opening unexpected Word documents attached to e-mail. Hackers often spam out thousands of messages with harmful attachments, such as Trojan horse programs, hoping unsuspecting victims will open them.
Trojans often look harmless and can quietly install themselves on a computer with no visible signs. The use of Word to mount an attack can be particularly effective since the file format is so widely used.

OES CHAPTERS CALENDAR
(as taken from your Ode Cards ... includes everything, hopefully!, except Official Visits and those are listed in the Masonic Calendar.  It has been suggested that I highlight all the Chapters on the Westside one color and on the Eastside another color.  Let me know if you like this arrangement.  The Cascades will be the dividing point!)

The Big Chill …

Sue Goode is Worthy Matron of Friendship Chapter in Vancouver, B.C.  I thought you might like to hear how she is supporting Cancer Dressings.  Love,

** Beth Eng, PM

THE BIG CHILL

What you may ask is The Big Chill ??? Well on Sun Feb 11 members of the Order of Eastern Star are meeting in Ladysmith and going for a swim in the Pacific, Why you may ask--well to increase awareness of what Star does and to raise money for Cancer Dressings--I hear that in addition to the press that police and firemen will be there . I hope they are good looking --anything to make it more palatable for these old bones. If I am lucky I may pass out and get mouth to mouth --probably from the oldest guy on the force. Tony will be there--not to swim ( what a wimp ) but to provide moral support and a hot buttered rum or two. If you feel you can support me with a donation I would appreciate it.

For those of you who are not members of Star let me give you a few facts about what we do------we raise funds for Cancer Research and cancer equipment

------  we have bursaries for medical, theological and academic students

-------  we support the Erma Boyce Library at the BC Cancer Agency

----------our biggest project is Cancer Dressings , By collecting and selling used stamps and by donations we purchase rolls of gauze and baton which are made into dressings which are provided free of charge to cancer patient following their return home--The Cancer Outpatient Clinics are also provided with these dressings as well. For anyone who wants to collect used stamps forward them to me and I will pass them on --every year we raise around $14000.   In 2005 500 volunteers made 150000 dressings

The Order of Eastern Star has been around for decades in 140 countries and have over 1,000,000 members. We are the largest fraternal order for men and women in the world,

To sponsor me contact me by Email, phone (604 525 6863) or mail and please remember no amount is too small.

Thanks everyone

Something to ponder ...
Did you know peanut butter can help with weight management? Research has shown that snacking on it helps control hunger without weight gain. I've actually found this to be the case for years and I eat peanut butter almost daily ... and despite the fat content, it's never caused my weight to spike.  -- Weight Loss Guide Jennifer Scott

Oooh!  I have been in New Westminster.  I have been LOST in New Westminster with two other ladies ... one who thought I was on the right track (Nancy Jorgensen) and one who said we were NOT going the correct way (Diane McQuery).  Did Nancy & I listen to her?  No!  She was in the back seat ... you know ... out of sight ... out of mind!  (Just kidding, Diane!!!)  We finally asked the car next to us in traffic for directions and they gave us a road map!  Didn't help as we had no idea where we were!  We had a navigation system on our car and wouldn't listen to her!  Hmmmm!  Plus!  We had three men sitting in Starbucks wanting to know where we were ... We finally LISTENED to the lady on the machine, put our wheels in the 'well' ... and taxied out to the correct location!  (That's pilot talk for getting our rears in gear and back to point of departure!)

Dress Code in Colorado ...
To the members of Colorado Grand Chapter,
It has long been the tradition in the Grand Chapter of Colorado to wear long skirts/dresses when being introduced on the floor. This displays the dignity and respect we feel toward our Order, our God, ourselves, and our Sisters and Brothers. This is a tradition held high to members of our Order.
We may see the introduction of pants in the future and don't want to exclude our Sisters if they choose to wear a pantsuit while sitting on the sidelines in Chapter. However, the Grand Chapter of Colorado, consistent with General Grand Chapter, will continue this year and perhaps until a vote of the membership is taken, to request that only long skirts/dresses be worn if you are an officer or are to be introduced on the floor – especially west of the Altar. If you choose to
wear a pantsuit to Chapter or Official Visit, do not be offended when the Worthy Matron chooses to introduce you from your seat.
There are ways in which our Order will certainly be changing to accommodate and encourage membership but we need to work together in determining and orchestrating any changes needed for the Good of the Order.
I thank those of you who voiced to me your opinion on appropriate dress and also thank everyone for adhering to our tradition until such time as it is properly addressed.
Star love,
-- Janet Malara, Worthy Grand Matron

Sickness and distress ...
As many of you already know Clayton was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this month.  He has been accepted at Loma Linda Medical Center in California for their proton radiation treatment program.  His first appointment is scheduled for February 22nd.  We will drive down a couple of days earlier and I will stay until about the first of March.  I'll fly home and then go back down in 9-10 weeks to help drive home.  He's in the process of trying to learn how to do email and retrieve his voice mail from the cell phone (the grandkids are teaching him).  As soon as he finds a place to stay I'll send out the address.  If everything goes according to plans he should be home around the second week of May.  Please keep him in your prayers.

SNIP AND SNIPPETS FROM SOUVENIR BOOK

Here are some "snip and snippets" taken from the Souvenir Book 43rd Triennial Assembly

25th Triennial Assembly Tampa, Florida  November 10-15, 1946
Referred to the Ritual Committee was a report from Wisconsin committee purporting their conviction that the accepted symbolic position of the star, being that with two points up, was thought to denote evil and consequently an erroneous arrangement for which they requested change.
26th Triennial Assembly  Toronto, Canada  1947-1949
Satisfaction evident in surpassing the $500,000.00 International Temple Fund goal was magnified by the announcement that the Grand Chapter of Michigan had generously undertaken, with the sanction of the Most Worthy Grand Matron a project of installing within the Temple a radio player and sufficient amplification that all sound including music from the organ and piano might be transmitted throughout the entire building.  An unusual benefaction, enhancing the treasure of the archives was on behalf of the Worthy Grand Matron of Washington.  Sister Frances Kerr, who had secured permission from the Most Worthy Grand Matron, to present a book of Esther which had been printed in May 1551.  It contains a "little" of the Books of Nehemiah and Ezra, and had been a priceless gift to Sister Kerr from a Supreme Court judge in the state of Washington, who had served two years in the Nuremberg trials in Germany, was considered one of the outstanding authorities on rare manuscripts, and had known of her interest in the Order of the Eastern Star.
    28th Triennial Assembly Washington D.C. September 11-15, 1955
The "Position of the Star" Committee, having studied with interest the Wisconsin Committee on Symbolism, respectfully reported its findings and conclusions in direct opposition to the reversing of the present position with the single point downward.  It was elaborated that the miraculous Star of Bethlehem would
seem to have logically pointed downward directly at the birthplace, that it had been so placed in the Order by devout men of great vision and that any revolutionary change would perpetrate  immeasurable confusion and expense. Many vexation problems had been placed before the Ritual Committee, not the
least of which demanded specific designation as to who would "present, introduce, and escort" a subject evoking prolonged and spirited debate, inasmuch as seven of the fifty-six of the Grand Jurisdictions had been giving the assignment to the Marshal, whereas the accepted change uniformally established the responsibilities to those of the Conductress and Associate Conductress.

DISCUSSION ... VOTING AT GGC

The question came up regarding the general membership voting at General Grand Chapter and here is a sample of some lively discussion!   It sounds like we are NOT alone in our feelings!

OHIO!  I tend to agree with you about letting all members vote at GGC. I was in Minneapolis and was speaking with someone from a very small jurisdiction (Rhode Island or someplace like that) and she said the same thing..the big jurisdictions would open eat the smaller ones in voting.
I have seen the same thing happen in another Masonic Organization. They have an all member vote at the supreme level. There is one jurisdiction that is huge and usually heavily attends the session. That one state will rule what supreme does.
Ohio just opened voting to all members at the Grand Level last year. I was in favor of that for the reason that it is our OWN jurisdiction. There are several people that have been in star for years and have, for one reason or another, not had the desire to go thru the line, but they should not be denied their vote as they probably know more about OES in Ohio (especially if they are a long term member) than some of the PM's that are short timers, but I don't think it should be applied to GGC. We are talking about the world here, and not just one jurisdiction. I do believe that there are folks that can vote at GGC, but I think they are under GGC and do not have their own GC.
    Just my opinion.

CALIFORNIA:  Another $ 0.02 added to the cup:
Although only a member for a few years, I cannot understand why any member who chooses to attend their own Grand Chapter or a General Grand Chapter should not have a vote. Not every member wants to be a WM or WP, nor does every member have the aspirations (or money) to become a WGM or WGP. Does that make them any less important to the Order? We all pay dues and care for the Order, otherwise we would not belong. Do we care any less about the future of the Order than the few who are currently permitted to vote for our future? There seem to be arguments for both sides, but I sincerely believe that IF a member cares enough to (and can afford to) attend GGC, they should by all means be permitted to vote. Unfortunately, we must presently hope that the Past Grands will vote the way the members from their respective area want, and not solely on their personal viewpoint.
How often we hear from some that they do not want change in our Order, but without change things die. In California we are fortunate enough to have a Grand Line that wants to see our Order grow and along with that comes a few changes.

FLORIDA:  This has come up at our Grand Chapter in Florida several times over the past 10 years and each time it was defeated. I personally am opposed to an all member vote. For years we held our Grand Chapter session in one area of the State and if everyone had the right to vote that area would run and rule Grand Chapter. No matter where we meet geographically we still give the vote to only 4 delegates in each Chapter. We do allow our PGM's & PGP's the vote and we also
allow those in the elected line to vote on Grand Chapter level. These voting delegates are for elections only. All P.M.'s & P.P.'s do have the right to vote on all issues and they have turned down the right to vote several times to keep things throughout our State fair. I have attended GGC for three sessions (missed this last one, due to being out of the Country), and plan to attend again in the future. I attended for the fellowship not the right to vote. I would hope those who have the right to vote took into consideration what the membership in their jurisdictions supported.

CALIFORNIA:  I have been reading all of these good comments, and they all have validity.
I have been to both Grand Chapters when I couldn't vote and when I now can.
It is so much more interesting if I feel I have a part in shaping our Order.
It would be like watching our President get elected and have no say in it.
This last October, I talked to one of CA Grands and found her viewpoint was totally different than mine. It makes me sad that a few of the more experienced folks get to impose their views for all of us. When I am able to vote, I find myself reading about the propositions and thinking more what would be good for the future of our Order, not how we've always done it in the past.

NOVA SCOTIA:  All members should vote,we are all equal,it is that simple. Just because you are a past WGM or WGP,you had your turn in the spot light, other members should have their say on GGC voting.
We now have every member vote in NS & PEI.
** Larry Ingham PP, Grand Rep to Nebraska in NS & PEI, Century #10, Elm #48, Nova Scotia, Canada GGC

CALIFORNIA:  OK, I just had to get into this discussion.
I was a member of Star for only 4 years when I attended my first Grand Chapter Session in San Diego. At the time only certain members could vote.
I was very upset that my opinions didn't count. I was told "tell someone my thoughts that could vote" but would that guarantee that my thoughts and believes would count, No!
A few years ago, the rules were changed here in California and now every member can vote.
When I couldn't vote that time in San Diego, I left Grand Chapter thinking "Well if my opinions don't count, why even be here?" I was very upset.
You see, I was told "you're only a member" that to vote you have to be a PM or PP.... Well, we have a couple of members in our Chapter that are 50 year members and have NEVER been through the line.... Some people just don't want that... But they are there at every meeting and every fund raiser!
Does this mean they don't count?
Just because I don't have the ambition to be a Grand Officer does not mean I'm not still a very active member of our Order.
I totally believe that every member should have the right to vote.....
We ALL pay the same amount of dues to GGC. So we should ALL have that right!
** Debbi Booth, PM, Secretary, Grand Representative of Texas in Calif. 2005-2007, Chowchilla Chapter #365, Chowchilla, CA GGC

OREGON:  As a 51 year member, I have been in Grand Chapter sessions that had a delegated vote and those which had a democratic vote of one vote per person registered and a member of that particular jurisdiction. Both have their pros and cons, though at state level I find the one vote per member works very well and people do make a effort to attend. In most Grand Jurisdictions, geography does not prohibit or increase attendance as most look for the least expensive with accessible accommodations whenever possible.
General Grand is a little different in that the attendance size dictates the location within the Most Worthy Grand Matron's Grand Chapter, at least I think it is usually in her Grand Chapter boundary. This could make a difference as to who can or cannot attend financially or time away from work. Having an evenly distributed voting pool also has made the difference when social changes have collided with area traditions. I think about our integrated chapters in California where those who join are received based on the defined Masonic Family relationships rather than skin color. If one area could overwhelm the voting body, these considerations and changes might be slower to happen or not at all.
My concern is, there are many members who, as has been mentioned by others, may never become a WM or WP for a variety of reasons. But even if they do, they may never be able to carry the financial burden needed to be a WGM and a WGP, therefore having a GGC vote. The costs have become so high that only an elite few will ever have that option. It is sad that we have become such an elitist fraternity when we are supposed to be sisters and brothers. It is also understandable that those who do have a vote may not be comfortable sharing it with whomever might happen to attend a GGC session from the subordinate chapters. It is a pecking order system in many ways. Is it time to step back and take a look at what it means to be a fraternal organization in the United States, at least. I'm not sure how the delegated voting works for those who come to GGC that are under General Grand Chapter directly and not under a Grand Chapter.
These are just some thoughts, they don't solve a thing.

ARIZONA:  Last August was the first time I attended our Grand Chapter here in Arizona. I had become a member in 2002. And only after attending Vision conferences (out of curiosity) in 2003 did my sister Kathy(initiated the same night in 2002) and I develop a good understanding of what the future of our Order was up against.
At that time, we did not travel to other chapters and we were truly "babes in the woods".  We received the right to vote as members last August. We did not have to speak to anyone to "get" them to give us the vote. Our Grand chapter voted from their heart and I have to believe for the future of our Order. We didn't even KNOW they were voting when we decided to attend.
Kathy and I had spent the last three years getting to know members of other chapters. We were taken under the wing of some dear friends we had met as members in our State drill team. At the time, we were unaware they were also members of our Grand Chapter and Worthy Matrons of chapters all our our State. They lovingly answered our questions and gave us ALL sides of each issue as they explained what was going on .
Many of our newer members did not attend last August with us. This year they will.
We plan to vote with intelligence, consideration and understanding. We are only able to do this because our Past Matrons, Past Patrons and Past Grands have taken the time to get to know us and become our friends instead of drawing a line of distinction between " those with experience and those who know" and "the new inexperienced members".
We may be "new" in Star, but we are experienced ,educated and successful in many other aspects of life. We are intelligent, moral and compassionate adults and we know how to listen and weigh decisions for the good of our Order.
I have heard both sides of this voting question . As "only members" We promise that we will vote from our hearts, after thought and consideration and after gathering as much knowledge as we can on all issues . We can only hope to make Star proud and live up to the tradition formed by our parents, grandparents and friends. And in the mean time -- we'll keep quietly working for the good of our chapters.

OHIO:  I've read the opinion of those who have posted. I have one question. Doesn't in bother anyone that those in charge of our organization don't believe that it's membership can "vote for the good of the order"?

Animated Atlas: Growth of a Nation
http://www.animatedatlas.com/movie.html

The Animated Atlas is a moving map of the United States, beginning with the growth of the country from the original thirteen states in 1789 through the present.  Listen to a short movie, stopping to click on individual states for more information.  The submitting subscriber highly recommends the site, explaining, "It includes the acquisitions from England and Spain, the Slave states, the Free states, a segment on the Civil war, and has some mentions of Central and South America, etc.  The Indian Nations are shown as they were during the Indian Wars... This is a must see, even if just the map part."  After your first peek, you'll have to agree with this subscriber's statements, "This is the best history lesson you've had in a long time - maybe the best ever!  Save and enjoy all year!"

Project Gutenberg

The Gutenberg Bible was the first book printed with movable type around the mid 1400's.  Technology has certainly advanced publishing techniques since that first Gutenberg printing!  The next generation of publications is aptly termed Project Gutenberg, "the oldest producer of free electronic books (eBooks or etexts) on the Internet."  The collection contains over 15,000 eBooks, most of which "are in the public domain in the United States.  All may be freely downloaded and read, and redistributed for non-commercial use."  Here's a great library that you can visit without ever leaving your home!

MINUTE MAN AWARDS

WGM Joanne Clark is honoring the Masons at the Official Visits this year.  She is selecting a Mason from a list given to her form the Worthy Matrons of each Chapter.  They will be called the "Minuteman" to go along with her patriotic theme. To qualify for the award, the Mason must be a 10 year member of Eastern Star, have served as Worthy Patron in the Chapter, and been active in the Chapter.  The pins are beautiful and were purchased from Dave Hattrick of ID, now residing for a spell in AZ.
So let's give these outstanding Masons some credit for all their work they do for our beautiful Order!  I will need some help here so please let me know who has been given this award in your Chapter during the Official Visit.
(For July, August, September and October ... please check in the archives on Connie's Corner on the GC of WA's website ... www.washingtonoes.org.  - the last list published in its entirety was in issue #6-052.)

A STORY FROM MINNESOTA OES

Two cars are stopped at a stop light; the light turns green, but the man in the first car doesn't notice.  The woman in the second car waits, but the man still doesn't notice the light change.  She begins pounding on her steering wheel and yelling at the man to move.  He doesn't move.  She is going ballistic inside her car, ranting and raving, pounding on the steering wheel and dash.  As the light turns yellow, she begins to honk her horn and scream curses at the man.  The man hearing all the commotion, looks up, sees the yellow light and accelerates through the intersection just as the light turns red.
The woman is beside herself, screaming in frustration as she misses her opportunity to get through the intersection.  She hears a tap on her window and turns to see the barrel of a gun held by a very serious looking policeman.  The policeman told her to shut off her car while keeping her hands in plain sight.  She complies, speechless at what is happening.  The policeman orders her to get out of the car--hands up--to turn and place her hands on the car roof, and after doing so was quickly handcuffed and hustled into the patrol car.  She was driven to the police station where she was finger printed, photographed, searched, booked and placed in a cell.
After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door for her.  She was escorted back to the booking desk where the original officer was waiting for her and returned her personal effects to her and said:  "I am sorry for the mistake.  But you see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn and cussing a blue streak at the car in front of you, and then I noticed the patriotic magnet with the Eastern Star logo and the Eastern Star logos on your tail lights and the bumper sticker that read "Love One Another," so I naturally assumed you had stolen the car.
From this story, let us resolve to " Commit to life what we have committed to memory."  Let us continue to practice the lessons of our Star and resolve to make them our way of life.
This is part of the article written by Barb Nordaune WGM of the Grand Chapter of Minnesota, and published in "STARLITES" their monthly News Letter.

4 very thin slices smoked ham (or proscuitto)
4 strips Swiss cheese

1-1/2 cups very fine cracker crumbs
  Salt and pepper
1/2 cup butter
1 cup uncooked mixed rice (half white, half wild)

1 can condensed cream of chicken soup or cream sauce
1/2 cup milk
1 Tablespoon chopped pimiento
1 teaspoon instant minced onion
2 Tablespoons dry white wine (or sherry)
1 can (3 ounce) button mushrooms, drained

TO PREPARE Chicken: Remove skin and bones from whole chicken breasts and flatten with cleaver.  Place in center of each breast a thin slice ham; on ham, place a 1 inch x 1/2 inch slice Swiss cheese.  Fold edges of chicken over ham and cheese; secure with string or toothpicks.  Dip chicken in egg which has been beaten with 1 teaspoon water; roll in cracker crumbs.  Season with salt and pepper.  Heat butter in skillet until foamy.  Brown breasts until golden brown on both sides, reduce heat, and cook until done.  Meanwhile, cook rice mixture.  Make white wine sauce.

Cold Orange Soufflé

from Traditions ... A Taste of the Good Life

1 cup cold water
2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
8 eggs, separated
1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup sugar
1 cup whipping cream, whipped

TO PREPARE:  Place water in the top of a double boiler and sprinkle the gelatin over the surface to soften.  Beat egg yolks lightly and add them with the salt to the gelatin.  Mix well.  Place over boiling water and cook, stirring constantly, until gelatin dissolves and the mixture thickens some, about 4 minutes.  Remove from heat and stir in orange concentrate.  Chill until mixture drops from a spoon into soft mounds.  Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry.  Gradually beat in the sugar and continue beating until the egg whites are stiff.  Fold the whites into the orange mixture.  Fold in the whipped cream.  Arrange a collar of double waxed paper around a 2-1/2 quart soufflé dish, 2 inches above the top of the dish.  Fasten with tape.  Pour mixture into dish can chill until firm.  Remove collar and decorate with orange sections.  A great summer dessert.  SERVINGS: 8 - 10

JOKES

During a county-wide drive to round up all unlicensed dogs, a patrolman signaled a car to pull over to the curb.
When the driver asked why he had been stopped, the officer pointed to the big dog sitting on the seat beside him and asked, "Does your dog have a license?"
"No," the man said, "He doesn't need one."
"Yes he does," answered the officer.
"But," said the driver, I always do all the driving."

Max Greenberg was at his favorite eatery, the Second Avenue Deli, when he called over the waiter.
    "Yes?" asked the busy waiter.
"Are you sure you're the waiter I ordered from?" asked Max.
"Why do you ask?" replied the waiter.
Max replied, "Because I was expecting he would be a much older man by now."

TIRED FROM WAITING for their overdue baby, my daughter Margaret and her husband Dave broke the monotony one night with a trip to the movies. Margaret went inside to get seats while Dave bought popcorn and drinks in the lobby.
Paying for the refreshments, my son-in-law knocked over his soda. The clerk mopped up the mess and refilled his cup. Rattled, Dave then joined his wife. Talking over the background music, he dramatically described his embarrassing episode. One of his expressive gestures upset the bucket of popcorn. Dave sheepishly headed back to the lobby.
When he was out of earshot, the woman sitting next to my daughter turned and said, "You're not going to let him hold the baby, are you?"  --Contributed to "Life In These United States" by Cynthia Holmes

Working as a court reporter, I listen to a lot of testimony that you won't hear on Law and Order, including the following give-and-take between the judge and a mother during a paternity suit. Judge: Was the child born out of wedlock? Mother: No, sir, just outside of Louisville.  --Contributed to "All In a Day's Work" by Mary Gale

MOTHER had decided to trim her household budget wherever possible, so instead of having a dress dry-cleaned she washed it by hand. Proud of her savings, she boasted to my father, "Just think, Fred, we are five dollars richer because I washed this dress by hand."
"Good," my dad quickly replied. "Wash it again!"  --Contributed to "Life In These United States" by Mary L Bounds

A PASSENGER on the bus I drive was telling all the other riders how proud she was to finally be getting her driver's license. "No more waiting in the cold for buses!" She proclaimed. "No more being late!" Then she leaned over and asked me to please let her know when we reached the stop for the department of motor vehicles. "I hope you don't mind," she said, "but my vision isn't good enough to read the signs."  --Contributed to "All In a Day's Work" by Paul Solem

Thought for the day:
A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day...30,000 to a man's 15,000.
The wife replied, "The reason has to be because a woman has to say everything twice."
The husband then turned to his wife and asked, "What?"

Tidbits from Adelphi Chapter's 'The Oracle '
  • I can't figure out what happened.  Parenthood used to be so simple.  I was full of wisdom, calm, self-assured, prepared for every situation ... but then we had kids!
  • Good judgment comes from experience - and experience, well, that comes from bad judgment.
  • On a rough day, remember that God created chocolate cake for such a day as this.  It's no coincidence that 'stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts'.
  • 'The secret to a happy marriage', says Denzel Washington, 'is to do what your wife tells you!'

HELOISE
  • Aluminum Pots Discolored?  To get rid of the dark stains, pour 1 cup of household vinegar into the pot/pan with 1 cup of water and boil until stains disappear. Wash, rinse and dry the pan.

  • Dog Sprayed by a Skunk?  To get rid of that awful odor: Mix one quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of mild dishwashing detergent (make sure it doesn't contain bleach or ammonia). Rub this mixture into your dog's coat. Don't allow any to drip into your pet's ears or eyes. Then bathe with a mild pet shampoo and rinse well.

  • Towels Have a Sour Smell?  Wash again in small loads (only the towels) and use the highest hot water level and the normal amount of detergent with 1 cup of sudsy ammonia (no bleach). Place in the dryer immediately.

  • Baking Soda Fire Extinguisher:  Use baking soda to put out small kitchen fires, caused by oil or grease, which can ignite during cooking. When a flare-up happens, turn off the heat, stand back and then toss a handful or two of baking soda on the bottom of the flames. Do not use baking soda for a deep-fat fryer fire because it could create a splash in the grease and spread the fire.

  • Room Has Stale Tobacco Odor:  Pour a capful of ammonia or vinegar in a bowl of water and let it sit overnight in the room. Put the bowl on a table — away from pets and children. The smell should be lessened or gone.

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY

Wow!  I just went on the website www.familywatchdog.us to view if there were any sexual predators living near us ... and there are TWO!  And then I put in my daughter's address in Airway Heights and there are three close by and she and her hubby have two teen-age daughters!  YIKES!  Then I put in my son's address in the Spokane area ... and there were 118!!!  My server does not allow popups so couldn't get the skinny on any of them ... but it is enough to make one worry!
We still have gobs of snow so if you want any ... we will load for free!  We had a new Dish installed yesterday and it does EVERYTHING except cook and do dishes!  It is one of those HD types ... and caller ID now pops up on the screen ... plus if you are interrupted, you can pause your program!  I was impressed.  Anyway, it is 'cool'!  While the man was installing it, though, the snow flakes were piling up again!
And now we are off for another weekend on the Westside.  Do hope that it won't be raining!  I keep forgetting my umbrella!  So see you Saturday night in Centralia if not before!
Until next time ... Hearty Patriot Hugs and happy thoughts.
