WHAT IS A VALENTINE?
A valentine is many things
A token of sweet love,
A gracious way to tell someone
The things you're dreaming of.
It is a sentiment expressed
In serious mood or gay
To lover, relative, or friend
Those things you'd like to say.
It is a message that spans
The barrier of space
And makes a distant loved one feel
As near as face-to-face.
What, really, is a valentine?
No words will quite suffice.
Except to say it's many things
And all of them are nice!

By their presence and love.
IN MEMORIAM ... MW TOBY JOHNSEN, Past Grand Master
The MW Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Washington regrets to announce the demise of MW TOBY JOHNSEN, Past Grand Master, Most Worshipful Grand Master 1979-1980.
Most Worshipful Brother Johnsen was born May 5, 1920; raised a Master Mason on May 24, 1958, in Occidental Lodge No. 72. Elected Master of Occidental Lodge in 1963; Appointed Grand Marshal in 1967 and again in 1973. Was Senior Grand Deacon in 1968; Deputy of the Grand Master in 1970-1972; elected Junior Grand Warden in 1976. Was called to that Celestial Lodge above on January 24, 2008.
'You have heard me speak many times about the beauty and sincerity of this great country. It has been a land of dreams and hope for many millions of immigrants, of whom I was one. I came to the United States from Norway as a young man, speaking with an Irish and Scottish brogue, who had lost everything I loved and cherished because of the brutality of war. I, too, was filled with dreams and aspirations which were fulfilled in 1948 when I became an American citizen. Only in this great country of the United States can a dream become a reality. You wonder why so many people would love to come to America? Only here can a dream and a reality walk hand in hand.' -- Toby Johnsen, Grand Master's Message, June 1980.
Funeral Services were February 9th, 2008 at 2:00 PM; St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 5710 - 22nd Avenue NW, Ballard, WA.

MESSAGES FROM MY MAILBOX...
Prayers needed...
The following message regards Most Worshipful Pete Cargill, Grand Master of Masons in Idaho. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers! I appreciate receiving this news from RW Doug Tucker, Deputy Grand Master and Brother Marvin Gerking, PGP of ID. MW Pete is a Honorary Member of Newport Lodge No. 144.

Dear
Vern, Please put this out on the net as the brethren need to know what is going
on with me. (you can also copy it over to Eastern Star, York Rite and Scottish
Rite and anyone else you can think of that should know.) As I told you on the
phone I got the word from the Doctor today. I had her write it down as I
couldn't remember all the words. It is Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) and /or
Myelodysplastic Syndrome subtype Refractory Anemia with excess Blasts II. (RAEB
II). They will be able to pin it down when I get to Spokane the first of the
week. At this time I don't know which doctors or which hospital. The treatment
is Chemotherapy, Cytarabine (Ara-C) and Idareubicin. This goes on for 7 days
and then they wait to see if the blood cells die. If they all don't die they do
it again for 5 days. I will probably be in ICU as I will be very susceptible to
any disease and they will want to keep me isolated. I will be in the hospital
for from 6 weeks to 2 months and then will not be up and going for another
couple of months. Apparently this stuff really nails your body. The treatments
don't always work and the prognosis is not exactly great; however, I am in
excellent health otherwise and I plan to live for a long, long time. I've got
way too much to do to be giving up now.
Richard Kaiser will take over as acting Grand Master, if and when I am
incapacitated, and we will get those parameters set up this week. I imagine
there will be a few weeks when I will not have the capacity to make decisions
for the craft as I understand this Chemo can mess up your head. I have every
confidence that the Grand Lodge Officers and all masons will take up the slack
until I can get on my feet again.
This week I will be working on my calendar to make arrangements for
the places and events I will miss.
I will miss seeing you all and participating in all the activities
for a few months, but God willing, and I think he will be, I will be up and
going by Summer.
Fraternally

sent around to your contacts ASAP. PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS,
FAMILY AND CONTACTS!
You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with
an attachment entitled 'Invitation' OR ONE CALLED 'POSTCARD,' regardless of who
sent it to you. It is a virus which opens an Olympic Torch OR A POSTCARD IMAGE,
which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be
received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list.
This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts.
It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and
open it.
If you receive a mail called 'Invitation' even though sent to you by
a friend, do not open it. Shut down your computer immediately.
This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by

Hi Connie
In your next Stars of Washington will you please put in there for me:
I want to thank all the Sisters and Brothers for the many cards, calls and prayers when I had my problem. I deeply appreciated your concern. I am doing better and I took it as a warning so our lifestyle has had to change somewhat but we all need a change at times I guess. Again many thanks.

Florida Keys ... Key West...
The three-hour drive from Miami down the Overseas Highway (US 1) to the subtropical Florida Keys, has become a rite of passage for RVers seeking an oasis of islands. Cruising on 42 bridges - including one almost seven miles long - over the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, provides an unparalleled motoring experience. The 120-mile Florida Keys island chain is home to North American's only living coral barrier reef. This teeming backbone of marine life runs the length of the Keys about five miles offshore. Key West was recently rated by The Discovery Channel as one of the best places to see by RV. Key West is the southernmost key. Nearby Duval Street refuses to disappoint travelers seeking a frothy margarita or a chance to celebrate day's end at Mallory Square's sunset celebration, where tightrope walkers, jugglers and fire eaters provide nightly amusement. The Hemingway Home and Museum offers avid readers inside into the famous writer's days on the island.
For information on the Florida Keys and Key West, call 1-800-FLA-KEYS or visit www.fla-keys.com.
Funny, but we were just discussing all this with Pat and Ron Amdahl the other day! They have been to the Florida Keys and Key West this past year in their RV and said that it is marvelous! I wonder if they watched the sunset at Mallory Square, tried some conch chowder and key lime pie?

STILL
HOLDING HANDS
by Anita Burney
I always said my Grandma and Granddad were "storybook" grandparents.
Grandma, a little round woman with white hair, wearing an apron, and with glasses perched on the end of her nose was the woman my granddad loved with all his heart.
Granddad was stooped and white-haired, but Grandma returned that love two-fold.
Both of them doted on their three granddaughters, but since I was the youngest and the daughter of their baby daughter, I was the one who really got spoiled! Due to my mother's illness and hospitalization, I lived with my aunt across the street from my grandparents when I was a little girl.
Every day after school, I went directly to Grandma and Granddad's
for the cookies I knew would be waiting. Munching on my cookies, I would sit at
Granddad's feet to listen to stories about the "olden days." Granddad came to
Oklahoma in a covered wagon and I loved the stories about his trek across the
country. Granddad was a registered pharmacist and at the time of his death at
the age of 93, he was the oldest registered pharmacist in the nation.
Neither of my grandparents ever learned to drive and one of my
fondest memories is when Granddad still owned his drugstore. He walked to town
every morning and at noon he closed the store and walked home for lunch.
But before he arrived, Grandma would fix lunch and then takeoff her apron, hang it on a nail in the kitchen, and set off walking toward town. She'd meet Granddad halfway and they would walk home together, always holding hands. They did the same thing at the end of the day.
On their 65th wedding anniversary, they were given a card with a poem on it entitled, "Let me hold your hand as we go downhill." The verse fit them perfectly -- they held hands everywhere they went.
I never heard them raise their voices. The closest either of them would come is when Grandma was fixing a meal and Granddad would steal a kiss. She'd push him away and say, "Oh, Johnny!" rather loudly, but you could tell she was pleased.
When Granddad got so feeble that Grandma could no longer care for him, their children decided it was time to send him to a nursing home. There was no way Grandma was going to be separated from him, so she went with him. There were twin beds in their room and that wouldn't do. So, their children got them a double bed. When Granddad died of pneumonia, Grandma followed within a year.
They've been gone for many years now and I still miss my "storybook"
Grandma and Granddad.
I never make a blackberry cobbler when I don't think of Grandma and
the blackberry patch she had in their backyard. She always made me a blackberry
cobbler out of the first ripened berries and canned lots of quarts so I could
have cobbler the year round.
Every time I get a whiff of somebody's cigar, I remember Granddad with his after dinner cigar with the smoke that curled around his head as he told me those stories.
Most importantly, I never see an older couple holding hands that I don't remember the deep love Grandma and Granddad shared.
I know they're still holding hands in heaven.

MY FAVORITE
VALENTINE
by Stefanie Wass
A shiny red scarf, covered in little white hearts, always seems to find its
way out of my dresser drawer this time of year.
As I tied the scarf around my neck this morning, carefully hiding the frayed edges underneath my turtleneck, I once again felt like the most special girl in the whole world.
Again, I was a ten year old, waking up on Valentine's Day morning, full of expectation, running downstairs and finding, like always, presents and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates waiting on the kitchen table just for me. I felt the love of my dad, a man who never, ever forgot to buy special Valentine presents for his two girls.
Dad's
gifts, true treasures sent from the heart, did not just arrive on Valentine's
Day. Throughout the year he constantly surprised me with tokens of love --
corsage to wear to church on
Easter Sunday, new guards for my ice skates, even a bouquet of red roses with a
card that said, "You'll always be #1" when I placed out of medal contention at a
skating competition.
Dad probably didn't realize it at the time, but he actually gave me a present each and every day of my elementary school years.
Waking before dawn to leave in time for his shift at a nearby chemical company, Dad didn't get to see me before he left for work each morning. So, he did what he could -- he left me a little note, penned in his characteristic uppercase printing, and placed it by my spot at the breakfast table.
For years, I was greeted each morning by his encouraging words:
5:40 am Friday Feb.
27, 1981
Dear Steffie,
Have a good day at school! Your math homework was perfect, except
for one little decimal point! We are going out to dinner after skating today.
The Wizard of Oz is on TV at eight if you're
interested. Will pick you up at the usual time tonight. Must get ready for
work. Love, Dad
5:35 am March 18, 1981
Dear Steffie,
Have a good day at school! Checked your math. Excellent! Perfect paper!
Have fun skating after school. Make sure your homework is done first. Will
pick you up as usual after work at 6:45. Love, Dad
Sometimes the notes would brief me on the news of the day:
5:35 am Tuesday January 20, 1981
Dear Steffie,
Have a good day at school! As of noon today we have a new
President. The hostages still have not left Iran, but it doesn't look like it
will be much longer before they will be on their way. Have fun skating! Take
care of your cold. Love, Dad
5:40 am January 21, 1981
Dear Steffie,
Have a good day at school! On TV Mom and I saw the freed hostages
arrive in Germany. Have fun skating and I will pick you up at 6:45. Checked
your math. Very good! Must get ready for work. Love, Dad
Although Dad passed away ten years ago, I can still hear his voice.
Luckily, I saved each and every note in an old scrapbook. Though yellowed by
time, Dad's words still speak volumes about a
father's devotion to his daughter.
A scarf covered in hearts was nice, but by far, my favorite Valentine's gift was the one that I received every morning of my childhood -- letters, penned by my dad -- a man who was never too busy to share both his time and love.
A SNOW DIARY ...
Hope everyone has as big a laugh as Miss Connie had with this humorous Diary that could possibly be of Ted Shrum. (NOTE) I don't think it is so funny from my angle of this padded room. – Ted
(And
you know sumtin? We were away from snow so many years while Ted was active duty
military that I made a promise! If I EVER get back to snow again, I am NEVER
going to leave! Unfortunately, when our snow was piling up higher and higher
here in P. O. County, our neighbor’s water & septic froze up and we haven’t seen
hide nor hair of them for about 3 weeks! Also, several houses from here down
river, a roof has caved in! Those plastic type car ports that Costco sells?
Several have collapsed until the weight of the snow! This over 4 foot of snow
had to go somewhere! )
(Warning: This gets violent. Don't try this at home.)
December 8: 6 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and
the wife and I took our hot drinks and sat for hours by the window watching the
huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses print.
So romantic. We felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow
covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a
more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever
had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy
again. I did our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came
along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to
shovel again. What a perfect life.
December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a
disappointment. My neighbor tells me not worry; we'll definitely have a white
Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow
by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think
that's possible. Bob is such a nice man: I'm glad he's our neighbor.
December 14: Snow, lovely snow! Eight inches last night. The
temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took
my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is
the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I
didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly
get back in shape this way.
December 15: Twenty inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and two extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.
December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on my rear end on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like heck. The wife laughed for an entire hour, which I think was very cruel.
December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for five hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try to not irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but I won't admit it to her. I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20: Electricity's back on, but had another fourteen inches of the darn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Darn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're busy. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying snow-blower, and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're ling. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.
December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas, because thirteen more inches of the white crap fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed to go out to shovel, and by then I had to go to the bathroom. By the time I got dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. I tried to hire Bob-who has plow on his truck-for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think the jerk is lying.
December 23: Only two inches of snow today. And it warmed up to zero. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did, but I think she's lying.
December 24: Six inches. Snow packed so hard by the snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the man who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the snow by his nose and beat him with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at l00 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the snowplow.
December 25:
Oh, Merry Christmas. Twenty more inches of the slop tonight. Snowed in. The
idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver
came by asking for a donation, and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The
wife says I have a bad attitude. She's
an idiot. If I have to watch It's A Wonderful Life one more time, I'm
going to stuff her into the microwave.
December 26: Still snowed in. Why the heck did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.
December 27: Temperature dropped to -30, and the pipes froze; plumber came after fourteen hours of waiting for him; he only charged me $1400 to replace all my pipes.
December 28: Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in SHE is driving crazy!!!
December 29: Ten more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That’s the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30: Roof caved in. I beat up the snowplow driver, who is now suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. Nine inches predicted.
December 31: I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8: Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the Bed?
