An Irish Rainbow of Blessings

RED is for love of those we hold dear

Our kith and kin, both far and near.

ORANGE is for Irish wit and mirth

And the cleverest jokes o’er all the earth.

YELLOW is for joy in simple pleasures;

The heart’s delights, the spirit’s treasures.

GREEN stands for Erin, the shamrock land

It’s customs and heritage, glorious and grand.

BLUE is for loyalty to family and friends

And to the Lord, whose love never ends.

VIOLET’S for heroes throughout history

The noble patriots of our history.

May these Irish sayings bless you with pride

And gratitude that you’re Irish inside.

SADNESS IN THE INLAND EMPIRE

LORENE JOHNSON

(Age 86)

Entered into rest on February 22, 2008 in Spokane, WA.  She was born to Herschel and Leona Bunch on May 10, 1921 in Perris, CA.  Lorene worked as a court reporter for the Federal Civil Service.  She was an active member for more than 50 years of the Order of the Eastern Star.  Lorene was a Past Matron of her Electa Chapter and also served as Grand Esther for the Grand Chapter of Washington in 1972-1973.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward D. Johnson,  Lorene is survived by sisters, Evelyn Doane and Pauline Ostrenger, both of Arlington, TX; nephews, Brock Bunch of Long Beach, CA; Paul Bunch of Spokane, WA,; and Michael Ostrenger of Arlington, TX; nieces, Dana Forrester of Arlington, TX and Jan Parrish of Cottage Grove, OR; and numerous friends.  A Memorial Service will be held on Friday March 14, 2008 at 2 PM at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. -- Spokesman-Review

We have known Sister Lorene for many, many years.  When Ted had orders to report to Geiger Field in February 1956, he worked in the Base Dispensary with Lorene ... she was a medical secretary for the Dispensary and Ted was a medic!  After Geiger closed in 1962 or there abouts, she went to work for the Wing Commander at Fairchild.  I never knew that she worked at the Federal Court House.  Her husband, Ed, (known as Easy Ed) was also out at Geiger, but he retired in the late '50's as we recall and went to work as the Downtown Masonic Temple Manager.  Easy Ed was far from being Easy and have no idea how he got that name!  When Ted and I were married, Lorene and Ed attended our wedding at Geiger Field Chapel (12/7/56).  I had dishes picked out and she gave me a big serving dish!  (This is really testing the ole gray matter! ) Lorene was very nice to me ... being newly married, I was full of questions and she was always there to help me out!  She would hint around that Ted would make a good Mason ... but ... (that came later in 1964!)  He knew that she belonged to a woman's organization and thought Masons played an important role in it!  Little did we know then.

      We shall miss you Lorene!

Prayers needed for PGM Nancy Jo ...

Hi, Connie
Could you put a note in the your next "Stars"?
It is time to start the prayer chain for Nancy Jo again. There is some good news and some bad news. Her scans this week showed that the tumors in her neck and face have disappeared with the exception that there is 1 small shadow. However, the tumors in her lungs are growing. So, bottom line is the radiation worked really well but she must undergo chemo starting next Fri and continuing for 16 weeks.
Thanks in advance for letting everyone know.

Hugs,
** Bev Haave, PGM

Another clever way of announcing a GR (this one in CO)  …

Saturday, March 8, while visiting Snowflake Chapter #153 @ Manitou Springs, WGM Trude and Acting-WGP David Wilcox made another Grand Representative appointment. When approached by Brother Vic (Escort of the WGM) and AGM Cindy Wardlaw, she could be heard saying "Oh, get out of here!" But with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face, sister Genie (Jenny) Wilcox became Colorado's newest Grand Representative. Proud husband David was not only able to present Genie with her Grand Representative pin, having had previous knowledge of her appointment, he even presented her with her business cards. Can you guess where Genie will be going?

1. The oldest man-made tourist attraction is in this state.
2. The first American to travel in space is from this state.
3. The first legal lottery in the twentieth century was adopted in this state in 1963.
4. The first free public library was established in this state in 1833.
5. The first alarm clock was invented in this state in 1787.
6. The first potato planted in the U.S. was in this state in 1719.
7. Of the thirteen original colonies, this state was the first to declare its independence from Mother England - a full six months prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
8. Captain John Smith named this state after the town of Hampshire, England.

If you guessed NEW HAMPSHIRE, you would be correct.

Sister Genie will be representing Colorado at the "Harvest of Hope" Grand  Chapter Session August 14-16, 2008 in Manchester, NH

Congratulations Sister Genie on your Grand Representative appointment and enjoy traveling to New Hampshire. We know you will represent Colorado well.

Important information re: IRS:

Connie:  You may want to include something about this in your newsletter. It is a really important item and you may want somebody smarter than me to edit the message so that it is correct.  I think the due date is April 15, but it may be May 15.  The IRS has reported that they expect 645,000 new entities to file this year under this new regulation.

** Bill Miller (Ill Bro. William R. Miller, 33°, SGIG, Orient of Washington)

--- Bill Miller wrote:
Would it be possible to prepare two income & expense statements from your 2007 records - one for the fraternal side and one for the Temple Association  - pretending that one existed in 2007.  I am thinking this would be of great help when the trustees meet for the first time and begin talking about things like a budget for 2008.

Now that it is a corporate entity, it will need an EIN or taxpayer ID in order to open a checking account.  And it is going to need some start up money in its checking account so it can begin paying things like the utility bills.

            Thanks
** Bill Miller

SGIG,
Yes, a budget can be created based on the 2007 expenses. Several issues will need to be resolved by this committee before a true budget can be agreed upon. Like, "Will the SR rent from the building Corp.?" and "Do the ladies preparing food for the SR dinners operate as separate contractors or do the work directly with the SR?." What about linen and cleanup?  Good questions that need to be resolved. My answers would be yes, yes and yes, this is a Scottish Rite expense, not a building expense.

These issues deserve an answer which is consistent from one month to the next and will take more than a short sentence and a dart throw to resolve.  Exactly right.  The new trustees will have to establish facility policies, anoint a building superintendent to carry them out and reach agreement with the various tenants/renters.

When will the first meeting of this committee occur?  Sunday, March 9 at 7 pm at the SR Office. The first issue is to determine who the first Trustees are.  Six are ex officio, that is, trustees by virtue of their office (Ven Master, SW, JW, PR, Sec & Treasurer)  There are several named in the organizing document adopted by the LOP, but the question now is were they elected as the first trustees or just names on the organizing document??

Who will be the officers of the Corp? According to the Articles and Bylaws, the Trustees select their own officers, with the proviso that the LOP officers cannot also be officers of the corp.  Specifically the Treasurer? The Valley Treasurer is an ex officio trustee, but does not necessarily need to be the corporation Treasurer.  I suspect the office was made ex officio thinking that he would be come the corp Treasurer. Same with the Secretary, but he too can decline to be corp Secretary.  Consider Bruce Gardner's health.  ??? Bruce is not a Trustee.  My plate isn't full, yet, but a deliberate plan is not obvious to me.
The budget isn't difficult but a deliberate, comprehensive plan for Tacoma is essential and fast becoming late in its design.

Update on Sister Betty Wirth ...

Hi Connie,

Thank you for putting in the news about Betty Wirth in your last Stars of Washington.  I just finished talking with Betty and she has asked me to thank every one for all the cards and messages.  She is hearing from so many, and some who have been friends in Eastern Star for many years.  She tells me that every time she opens a card it brings back so many happy memories.  They are all on display in her room and she gets many comments from the staff.

Her attitude is absolutely fantastic.  She is very upbeat.  I admire her greatly.  Just keep sending the messages to her.  You are all the best.

Sincerely,

** Pat Schaefer

Loss of an OES Sister & Rainbow leader in CA …

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
This morning (3/6) I received a forwarded e-mail from one of our neighboring chapters to report the passing of Sister Vickie Diem. Many of you in California know Vickie for her work with the International Order of Rainbow for Girls.
Once again we are reminded of the need for Relay for Life in the battle against Cancer and the support of Cancer Research.
No further information was provided beyond announcing the break in the Golden Chain. Vickie had hoped to live and have the strength to attend at least one more Grand Assembly, but it was not to be.

Did you ever wonder?
The Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is the developer of the ‘Did You Ever Wonder’ website.  The site is a dynamic project designed to allow renowned lab scientists the opportunity to answer questions on a variety of subjects, twelve different questions being posed each month.  Some of the current topics include tumors, genetics, subatomic ghosts, Superman vision, as well as other discussions.  Each question has links to the contributing scientists’ work, photos and other related information.  http://www.lbl.gov:80/wonder/

Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad...

Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad is an interesting educational resource for elementary school students, as well as an enchanting site for adults.  Produced by Mrs. Taverna's second grade class at Pocantico Hills School in Sleepy Hollow, New York, the care and attention that went into constructing this site is obvious.  Children can use the easy-to-follow instructions to find out about Harriet Tubman's life, the Underground Railroad, "The Drinking Gourd," and much more.  The illustrations and written material are the work of the second-graders, making this a site to which youngsters can easily relate and learn.  For adults, Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad offers a beautiful look at encouraging educational exploration by children. http://www2.lhric.org:80/pocantico/tubman/tubman.html

EASTERN STAR IN SOUTH AMERICA ...

My husband and I bring you greetings from our Sisters and Brothers in Peru and Bolivia.
It has been four weeks now since my husband Jim and I have returned from spending 9 weeks in South America (more specific Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile). The memories we have shine brightly on our minds, and while there are many wonderful and at times humbling experiences, we would like to share with you our Eastern Star experiences in Peru and Bolivia.
I recall an email sent last fall from Brother David White, Secretary of Middletown #319 Chapter in KY on “why growth in South America and not here”. I believe we can learn some things from our South American family; - talking more about our order in our communities, being more positive towards our sisters and brothers, and proud to belong to this beautiful order. Jeff Bolstad, GGCCM Visionquest and PGM MT has written a couple good articles on growth and building our beautiful order (Eastern Star Journal Fall 2007/Winter 2008).
I had been communicating via email to one sister from Flora Tristan Chapter #2 in Arequipa, Peru, for the past several years. It was exciting to be able to finally meet her. While in Arequipa where we spent Christmas, I contacted Flora Tristan’s Secretary and Worthy Matron. We visited with them over a wonderful lunch on New Year’s Day and learned about their projects. They worked to be able to help children who were orphaned, and children that were hospitalized. They also handed out toys and most important, gave these children love.
We shared in our own chapters’ projects and in sharing, we learned more about their challenges and struggles in the Order.

Eastern Star in Peru is rather interesting because the sisters are not allowed to meet in the Masonic Lodges. And interesting enough there seemed to be at least THREE Grand Lodges but only one is recognized, that being the Grand Lodge of Peru. So the Sisters meet in private homes. We visited the meeting place of Flora Tristan, and while small, it met their needs.
We left Arequipa on January 3rd, arriving in Lima where Jean Garay, the deputy to the MWGM and two other potential members - Mapy and Norma, were waiting for us at the airport. I had met Jean in Portland at the Triennial. We went to breakfast and then they drove us around the city, going to pre-Inca ruins, the beach, cooling off with ice cream, and just a wonderful afternoon of sharing in good company. The following evening we met Jean and her family at their home. Later, we visited their meeting hall, again a private home they rented followed by going to a park with fountains orchestrated with lights and music.  We met 6-8 other sisters and brothers and we all enjoyed a beautiful evening of water fountains, lights, music and great company of our Peruvian sisters and brothers. As if that was not enough, we all headed to a large restaurant where we found ourselves eating a banquet of Chinese food at midnight! Jean and I visited about their projects and their work to feed, house and share their love to the homeless children there in Lima, of which there were many.

From Eastern Star in Peru, we went to La Paz, Bolivia. Bolivia has 14 chapters, 4 in La Paz, and as everyone has heard the new Fenix chapter that was instituted in January this year. Here, I had been in touch with a sister for the past several years. Lourdes met us at our hostel and took us to her home. She arranged everything we would need (dress, suit etc) in order to attend an installation that evening (Armonia #13). The installation was very much like ours in BC and I found interesting that they use Tunics – all white zip up front dress like gowns. Everyone wore the same. (How many times in our own chapters have we focused more on the length or colour of the dress of a sister rather than the simple fact that she was there at the meeting? It was a wonderful installation and followed by a full meal – again at midnight! Lourdes invited us to stay at her home rather than in the hostel.
We also attended the installation of Renacer Chapter – Lourdes’ chapter of which she was the outgoing worthy matron. Lourdes’ brother- in-law was the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Bolivia and Jim was able to attend a Lodge meeting – his Spanish is very limited but
found a few Brothers who guided him through the meeting. They have a lodge that meets only in English but was not holding a meeting the time we were there. The chapters in Bolivia are able to meet in the Masonic Halls and it was a very fine meeting hall where the installations were held, full kitchen and banquet room. While in LaPaz, we were also honoured to be able to visit with the Grand Master of Bolivia, Roberto Auchen Homsi, and while Jim attended the Hispano
Boliviano #17 Lodge meeting, Lourdes and I had dinner with Roberto.

We talked about the projects that Renacer Chapter are involved with. The 4 chapters in La Paz take one Saturday a month and cook a lunch for 150-200 homeless people over the age of 70. This project was called “Hot Meals for the Abandoned Elderly”. There are many elderly
people sitting on the streets panhandling for food as most of them have no family to provide for them. The State cannot support them, and there are few organizations that have the funds to work with the elderly. The project started in September 2005. At the end of each working Saturday the chapter members felt blessed with the gratitude of many happy faces. “We are thankful to God for the opportunity to be of service. Our resources are scarce to reach the needy; however, our hope is to make this project bigger with the participation of good hearts.” (Lourdes)   They use the kitchen of one of the sisters starting at 9:30 am with a meditation, breakfast and by 11:30 they finish packing up the lunches.
Another project they worked on was the Alalay Children’s Home which is an organization that provides shelter and food to orphan children. Approximately 25 children, ages 7 to 18, kids who used to live on the streets due to different causes, receive services there. All children work after school hours shining shoes, washing cars or designing greeting cards, especially around Christmas, to help with expenses. Although Alalay children must follow certain rules while living at the Alalay Home, they are free to leave if they decide to do so.  There are many successful stories of Alalay residents who now are good adult citizens. The aim of the project was to provide hot water showers to the Alalay Home Children. There are many other orphanages with similar needs and hundreds of children who live on the streets that the chapter members would love to help and save, but funds are limited. Thanks to this project, children are able to enjoy good hygiene and hot water.  The Rainbow girls (there weren’t any Job’s Daughters) and DeMolay are very involved with the Eastern Star chapters. With Rainbow not having to have a Masonic affiliation, they are able to get members right after they reach their majority.

The sisters in Peru and Bolivia are excited about the Order, and while they face many challenges, some similar to our own challenges, and others very unique to them, they work together with the hope and faith of Martha, and as the Star point of Ruth teaches us that gathering here a little and there a little they are able to serve those around them as exemplified in the life of Electa. Their hope is that the elderly will live the latter part of their lives happy.
Since arriving back to Vancouver, I have received a few emails from the sisters in Bolivia. The new chapter in Santa Cruz is going well, but the flooding in a region close by (Beni) has been severe. The sisters from other chapters there are doing what they can to help the people of Beni, as well as the Rainbow, DeMolay, and the Grand Lodge, since these Beni people have lost everything due to flooding. They really are a large Masonic Family working together for the needs of others less fortunate. We consider ourselves extremely blessed, and have learned a lot from this experience in South America. It has been a beautiful experience meeting and sharing with these sisters and brothers.
In each of our chapters we all have our work that we do and certain projects we are working towards. But perhaps we can open our hearts a bit bigger to helping these sisters and brothers, and remembering Electa’s Cup.
