    Our grandson called today to say that buttercups are everywhere on the 'home ranch'!  WOW!  Spring is coming!!!  It is hard to believe, though, as we had ANOTHER four inches of WET snow on Friday night/Saturday morning!  Our snow has probably melted down to just a foot now so if there are any buttercups, they are BURIED!

   But just in case the trees are budding and the Snowdrops are blooming in your neck of the woods ... ENJOY!  Perhaps this poem may reassure us all that spring is either definitely here or close by!  

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers today;

And give us not to think so far away

As the uncertain harvest; keep us here

All simply in the springing of the year.

Dream Camp news ...

Dear Connie: Dream Camp will be open for renting starting in April.  Contact Donna Lind at 360-568-2724 if interested.  The Rainbow Camp Committee will be serving a breakfast for $2.00 on Easter Sunday, March 23rd after the Easter Morning Service around 8:00 a.m.

Interesting …

            Thank you Connie, it is good to be back on Stars of Washington.

            Ron and I attended Lorene Johnson's Memorial Service yesterday.  Your information about her was interesting and I have a story about her too.  She and I were teenagers together in southern California, her family moved next door to mine in Riverside during the Great Depression.  She was the same age as I and we went to church and high school together.  Before we graduated her family moved across town so then we only saw each other at school, had some of the same classes.  We graduated in June of 1939 and then went our separate ways.  In 1959 when Ron was transferred to Spokane I visited Electa Chapter one night and there was Lorene, small world. We were so excited and of course I got my demit and joined Electa, I had the privilege of being chairman for her Grand Esther Reception.  Will miss her very much.

            Thanks again for getting me back on line.

Another GC of CO GR appointment …

   Connie, found a mistake.  Trinity Chapter is not in Tacoma, even though our WGP has moved us around several times when introducing me and our Installation will be April 14th the second Monday in April at 7:30 pm at the Olympia Masonic Center in TUMWATER.  Thanks for all you do to keep us informed and the gracious way you accept these little mistakes.  Love,

• What isn't the number 11 pronounced onety-one?
• If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea, does that mean that one out of five enjoys it?
• Why do croutons comes in airtight packages?  Aren't they just stale bread to begin with?
• If people form Poland are called Poles, then why aren't people from Holland called Holes?

• A Wisconsin woman has spent six days in jail for unpaid library fines.  Keeley Givhan, a mother and college student, says police initially pulled her over for ‘not having a light bulb over my back license plate.’ But then informed her she owed $159 in unpaid library fines and another $172 for missed court appearances related to the overdue books.  Lacking the cash to pay her fines, Givhan was jailed for six days.  A violation is a violation, explained police Capt. Bill Tyler, ‘whether you’ve got dope or library books!’
• A Minnesota lawmaker has launched a crusade to convince high school students to stop wearing so much perfume.  State Rep. Karen Clark, a Democrat, says that the air in the city’s schools has become so thick with scented body spray that students with asthma are starting to suffer.  She’s proposed legislation to run, ‘awareness campaigns’ on the problem, which Mikolai Attenberg, a senior at Minneapolis South High School, says is all too real.  Many of his classmates, he says, ‘think that putting Axe allover them is a substitute for showering.’

GOOD WEEK FOR:

• Second helpings:  After a Sicilian court ruled that an accused Mafioso could go home because he was too fat for any jail in Italy.  Salvotore Ferranti, who weighs 462 pounds, couldn’t get through prison doors, and didn’t fit in any prison bed. 

BAD WEEK FOR:

• The Grim Reaper:  after the village of Sarpourenx, France, outlawed dying.  The ordinance was a protest against a court ruling forbidding the town from expanding its cemetery.  ‘Offenders will be severely punished,’ it decreed!
• Joy Douglas of Boulder, CO, who was fined $1,000 for dyeing her miniature poodle pink.  Douglas said she stained her dog with natural beet juice to raise awareness of breast cancer, and vowed to fight the case in court. 
• Birdies, after pro golfer, Tripp Isenhour was charged with animal cruelty after he killed a squawking hawk by driving a golf ball at it.  Isenhour said he was just trying to scare the bird away, but struck it squarely on his tenth drive.  (Wonder where that is located on a bird???)

Campfire Mints?  Try this …

Hi Connie, as this is the time of year that kids our out selling campfire mints have this super yummy recipe that the kids would say are a BOMB.

Camp Fire Mint Brownies 

2 1/2  squares chocolate               1 tsp. Baking Powder

1 cup butter                                  1/4 tsp. soda

1 1/4 cups sugar                            1/2 tsp. salt

2 eggs                                          1 cup chopped nuts

2 tsps vanilla                               20 camp fire mints

1 1/4 cups flour

Melt chocolate and butter together over very low heat. Beat eggs, sugar, and vanilla until fluffy. Add egg mixture to chocolate. Add dry ingredients that have been sifted together. Spread dough into greased 9x13 pan. Bake 350° for 24 to 30 minutes. Take out of oven and arrange mints over top of brownies immediately. Let stand until candy is melted. Spread mints over brownies. Cool.

ASHLEY GOES HOME

   Ashley, a little black Poodle, shared his home with Shirley and Lee, but there was no doubt he was Shirley's dog.
    He came there as a puppy and seemed quite happy during his nearly 14 years.  Neither Shirley nor Lee were in good health.  They seldom left home, except to shop or visit the doctor or drugstore, and Ashley became a homebody.
    My daughter Judy, lived next door.  She and Ashley were friends. Judy usually took him for his grooming or to the vet for shots.  He visited Judy daily, barking at her gate for admittance, to get treats and play with her dog.
    During the winter, Shirley became ill with pneumonia and passed away.  Lee was unable to live alone and opted for assisted living. He could no longer care for Ashley and knew of no one who wanted an old, deaf, partially blind dog that was on heart medication.
    Lee's sister, who was taking care of him until the move, urged him to put the old dog down.  Lee had another option -- maybe Judy would take him.
    Judy could hardly bear it as she loved Ashley dearly and felt he might easily live another year or maybe two.  She was reluctant to take him, as she already had a dog.  She knew she would grow closer to Ashley and it would be more painful when he finally passed. Ashley also woke during the night for potty breaks.
    Judy had less than a month to decide before Lee moved.  She agonized for a couple of weeks, and finally said yes, she would adopt him.
    When Lee moved, Judy brought Ashley next door.  He loved Judy, but wanted to go home.  After all, he was used to visiting and returning home.  Judy made two trips with him to the now vacant house before he understood his people were no longer there.  He never asked to go again.
    Ashley moped for several weeks, before adjusting to his new routine.  Then school was out, and Judy, who is a teacher, had her summer vacation to Texas coming up.  Worried that the trip would be too much for him, she took Ashley to the vet, who checked him over and declared he would probably make the trip all right.  He gave her meds in the event he was car sick or nervous.
    Ashley was just fine without the help of medicine.  He enjoyed riding in the car.  When he arrived in Texas, he became a different boy.  He loved my cats and dogs.  The world was his oyster.  Ashley played with the cats, established his own place among my brood and had the time of his life.  He ate better, slept throughout the night without potty breaks and even became a little bossy with the other animals.  We decided he really liked Texas.
    He would live another year and make a second trip to Texas. Again, he was a happy camper and loved every moment, behaving as if he had never left.  He seemed to remember everything and found his place from the previous year. Ashley enjoyed being here and he loved to travel -- something he had missed in his life.

    He almost made a third summer but after a brief illness, he passed one week after his 16th birthday in May and only a few days before his planned visit to Texas.
    Many other pets were crossing the bridge the day he arrived, but it wasn't hard to spot Ashley.  We had visions of him arriving at the Rainbow Bridge wearing his hand tooled red leather boots, a bandana around his neck, and his cowboy hat.
    As he walked across the bridge, his stub of a tail began to wag and he broke into a run.
    Yes!  His beloved Shirley was waiting with open arms for him on the other side.

            (Clara lives in Texas at her "Animal House" -- two indoor cats, several outdoor cats, two small dogs, raccoons, opossums and a family of armadillos.)
