SADNESS IN THE INLAND EMPIRE …

JOHN H. ‘BUD’ HARRIS

Our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend left our presence to be with the Lord March 18th, 2008 in Spokane, Washington, with his family at his side.  He was born January 20, 1925 to John and Dora Harris on the family farm.  He graduated from Amber High School in 1944.  Shortly after, he joined the Army, serving in WWII in the 101st Airborne and was in the European Theater returning home in 1946.  In December of 1946 he married Florence Goodwin; they recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.  He belonged to Mason’s, serving as Master of Temple Lodge, Eastern Washington Lodge of Research and Spangle Lodge; Worthy Patron of Martha Chapter OES and Associate Guardian of Bethel #17.  He was a District Deputy (of the Grand Master) and Grand Tyler for the Grand Masonic Lodge of Washington.  He also was a Volunteer Firefighter for District 3 Amber Station and a member of the American Legion.  He retired to Cheney, WA in 1982 from the family farm, but returned almost every day to help when he could.  He is survived by his wife Florence; and four sons: Bob, Les (and Rosemary), John (and Diana), Paul (and Martha) all of Cheney, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Renee, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Haskins.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Spokane Shriner’s Hospital for Children, PO Box 2472, Spokane 99210-2472.  A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Cheney Funeral Chapel followed by urn burial at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

One thing not mentioned was that Bud was a former Grand Representative of, I believe, Kansas!  I recall going to his Honor Night and it seemed to be a bit ‘corny’, but maybe that was just our Bud!  Always full of life and never without a smile!  God rest your soul, Brother Bud!

And there we’ll slumber by thy side;

There, reunited, ‘neath the sod,

We’ll wait, not doubt in His good time

To feel the raising hand of God!

To be translated from the earth,

This land of sorrow and complaints,

To the all-perfect Lodge above,

Whose Master is the King of Saints!

And another sad note … Sister Florence’s brother … JAMES HOWARD GOODWIN … passed away the week of the 14th of this month.

Brother Jim was born on September 17th, 1922 to Sidney and Medora Fuller Goodwin at Crab Creek, WA.  He attended school at Amber, WA; graduated Salutatorian in 1942; actor in three-act plays; on athletic teams.  He served as PFC in WWII from December 1, 1942 to November 21, 1945 in European Theater of War (France & German); landed at Marseille, France.

Jim married Marie Eloise Holt on June 19, 1947 in Spokane, WA.  They had three boys, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.  Jim and Eloise celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1997 and 60th anniversary in 2007.

Organizations include:  50 year member of Amber Grange, served as Master for eight years; State Grange and 7th Degree member; AARP member; former American Legion Member; Life Member as a Master Mason; received Grand Master’s Achievement Award; Honorary Past Master of Temple Lodge #42 F&AM; past Associate Guardian of Cheney Job’s Daughters; Order of Eastern Star and Past Patron of Martha Chapter #60; life member of OES; National Camping Travelers; Master  of Travel of Inland Empire Chapter #1709; life member of Veteran’s of Foreign Wars; confirmed in Cheney Emmanuel Lutheran Church in 1953.

Jim worked as a gas station attendant for Standard Oil Company and Texaco Company, service man at Brown and Holter and Ford Garages in Cheney, and at Eastern Washington University for 22 years on maintenance crew and paint crew; raised beef cattle.  After returning from the service, Jim worked for Spokane-Portland Railroad at Amber.

Survivors include wife, Marie Eloise; … and sister Florence Harris …    Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the American Cancer Society.  The Memorial Service was exactly a week before Brother Bud’s … same place and same time!

Both of these Brothers will be sorely missed in the Masonic Fraternity and its Concordant and Appendant Bodies!

MESSAGES FROM MY MAILBOX…

I have had a stressful week, boy howdy!  First off … last weekend, my Outlook Express CRASHED!  My computer guru came over Saturday morning and got all my OLD emails from way back when they all ‘achieved’ on me … onto Outlook … plus my files … and my Address Book … but that ended up in the Contacts, which was fine.  But when I went to write a new message, I had no addresses in my address book!  I would have to go to Contacts and cut & paste!  Gees!  There was no way I could put out a STARS doing that!  So last evening, Mr. & Mrs. Guru helped me and we thought to no avail.  But this morning when Ted and I had no email service, I booted up my machine and this afternoon, I noticed that I had my ADDRESS BOOK where it is supposed to be!  Yahoo!  So now we are back in business … but I am afraid some of the news will be a bit late, but just consider the source.

Another problem … when my current email was brought ‘forth’, it came all with the current date (last Saturday).  SO … PLEASE!  If you do not see your message posted, please try again!  I promise to be a better ‘steward’ of the messages!!! LOL!

Help needed …

Dear Members of Eastern Star and Masons -

As you know, in 2005 our Grand Chapter voted to support John Grobler in his efforts to becoming Most Worthy Grand Patron of General Grand Chapter in 2012.  Brother John was elected to the position of Right Worthy Grand Sentinel at the 2006 Triennial Session in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With his election our jurisdiction and the jurisdiction of West Virginia, each needs to raise $100,000 to host the session in Pittsburgh in 2015.

The Triennium Central Committee is compiling a cookbook to sell as a money maker for the Triennium Session in 2015.    We need the help of the members of Eastern Star and Masons to make this a successful money maker for the session.  Please forward your favorite or special recipes to either

Margaret Sherman, 6232 - 186th Street SW, Lynnwood, WA 98037-7240 or email the recipe to hment6@comcast.net    or to Sandy McAmmond, 1027-D NE 130th Street, Seattle, WA 98125-4069 or email them to me at starsnmusic@aol.com     We have a short time to gather these recipes to make our cookbook bigger and better so we have set a deadline to receive these recipes by April 5, 2008.

We appreciate any recipes that we receive and we thank you for supporting our Triennium Central Committee in getting this cookbook compiled and published.

** Margaret Sherman, PM, Sandy McAmmond, PGM

Hmmm!  I know that every week or so I am donating 3-4 recipes for some cause!  Haven’t figured out to what cause, but know that it is CUZ I love recipes!  Perhaps some of them will work for you!  I do occasionally try them!  Sometimes, at dinner time, Ted has a happy face … sometimes he says ‘let’s go grab a burger!’

A bit late … but … EASTER IS MARCH 23 Interesting facts

Easter this year is: Sunday March 23 2008.  As you may know Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20).  This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.   Found out a couple of things you might be interested in!   Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) but that is pretty rare.

This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!). And none of us have ever or will ever see it a day earlier! Here are the facts:
The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now).  The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if you're 95 or older you are the only ones that were around for that!).
The next time it will be a  day earlier March 22 will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!

Grand Canyon Arizona

The breathtaking beauty of the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is like nothing else you will ever experience.  Within its vast expanse and awesome depth, there is an ever changing panorama of color, from the first light of day until the sun sets on the distant horizon, concluding the melodrama until another day.  Located entirely in northern Arizona, the park encompasses 277 miles of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands.  The Grand Canyon is more than a great chasm carved over millennia through the rocks of the Colorado Plateau.  It is more than an awe-inspiring view.  It is more than a pleasuring ground for those that explore the roads, hike the trails, or float the currents of the turbulent Colorado River.  This canyon is a gift that transcends what we experience.  Its beauty and size humbles us.  Its timelessness provokes a comparison to our short existence.  In its vast spaces some find solace from their hectic lives.  The Grand Canyon we visit today is a gift from past generations.  Take time to enjoy this gift.  Sit and watch the changing play of light and shadows.  Wander along a trail and feel the sunshine and wind on your face.  Attend a ranger program.  Follow the antics of ravens soaring above the rim.  Listen for the roar of the rapids far below.  Savor a sunrise or a sunset.  For more information, visit www.grandcanyonchamger.org. or www.nps.gov.

… The Sweet Science of Chocolate …

Happy Valentine's Day!  Naturally, this celebrated day is not complete without chocolate.  Here’s an entire site dedicated to chocolate lovers everywhere.  Explore the history and science of chocolate.  Visit the Amazon rain forest and see cacao--the source of chocolate growing on the tree.  Take a video tour of a real chocolate factory (cyber samples provided).  You can actually listen to scientists explain the chemical properties of chocolate, why it may be good for you, and why it makes you feel so good.  In addition to all the facts, this site will help you learn how to temper chocolate perfectly.  What more could one ask on this special day!  View:  http://www.exploratorium.edu:80/chocolate/

Just for fun …

The Easter Bunny has its origin in pre-Christian fertility lore.  The Hare and the Rabbit were the most fertile animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the spring season. The bunny as an Easter symbol seems to have it’s origin in Germany, where it was first mentioned in German writings in the 1500’s.  The first edible Easter bunnies were made in Germany during the early 1800’s and were made of pastry and sugar.

The Easter bunny was introduced to American folklore by the German settlers who arrived in the Pennsylvania Dutch country during the 1700’s.  The arrival of the “Oschter Haws” was considered “childhood’s greatest pleasure” next to a visit from Christ-Kindel on Christmas Eve.  The children believed that if they were good the “Oschter Haws” would lay a nest of colored eggs.

The children would build their nest in a secluded place in the home, the barn or the garden.  Boys would use their caps and girls their bonnets to make the nests.  The use of elaborate Easter baskets would come later as the tradition of the Easter bunny spread throughout the country.

“Oh! Here comes Peter Cottontail, Hoppin’ down the bunny trail.  Hippity hoppity, Happy Easter day!”

 Rainbow news …

Have I mentioned to you that our Fidelity Assembly, International Order of Rainbow for Girls, will be Instituted on April 19th? The paperwork has all been filed, and we’re marching those ducks nicely in line. If you know of a girl between 11 and 20 who is interested in being a Rainbow Girl, now is the time! Drop me an email or give me a call so we can make it happen for her.
Brother Joe Granger of Clemson Lodge #254 is building a new set of pedestals for us, and they are absolutely gorgeous! We have also had to order quite a number of items from Supreme Assembly that are still needed for Fidelity Assembly.
Many of you have asked what you can do to help the Assembly, and we’ve come up with a plan. Each pedestal will have a small brass plate attached, with “Fidelity Assembly, April 19th, 2008” followed by the names of donors. For a donation of $50 or more an individual, group, appendant body or business will have your name engraved on one of the new pedestals with the notation “gift of. .” or “in memory of..” as a permanent tribute to your support of the girls.  Multiple names may be engraved on each pedestal, as the cost of each is well more than $50. It is hoped that these funds will offset much of what we have had to purchase for the start up of the new Assembly and give the assembly a good start.
Since we are not able to have an account in the Assembly name until after we are Instituted and all that paperwork goes through, checks must be made out to me, Loey Krause. Once the paperwork is through I will be happy to give you a receipt for tax purposes in the Assembly name.

WHEN THE MUSIC STOPPED

For those who are unaware, at a military theater, the National Anthem is played before every movie.

From a Chaplain in Iraq:  I recently attended a showing of "Superman 3," here at LSA Anaconda. We have a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through The National Anthem the music stopped.

Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments; and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place. Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again. The Soldiers continued to quietly stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped. What would you expect to happen?

Even here I would imagine laughter, as everyone finally sat down and expected the movie to start. But here, you could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier continued to stand at attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand soldiers, finishing where the recording left off:" And the rockets red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there. Oh, say does that Star - Spangled Banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave"

It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq. I wanted you to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here. Remember them as they fight for you!  Pass this along as a reminder to others to be ever in prayer for all our soldiers serving us here at home and abroad. For many have already paid the ultimate price.

CROCUS RISING

by Lauren Strouse

Winter was a new experience after we moved to the farm from Black Lake.

It seemed colder, longer, and more isolating.  We couldn't run across the street to meet our friends for a day of ice skating or sledding.  There was no large group of kids to play with as we waited for the school bus.  Our closest neighbors were now a quarter of a mile away.

My brother and sister and I waited alone in the cold at the top of our driveway for the school bus.  We did have hills to slide on, but no lake for skating or fishing -- the closest ice rink was five miles away in Carver.

The first winter we spent at the farm was especially difficult.

My mother developed pneumonia at Christmas time and it took her a long while to recover.

Minnesota winters can be brutal and I remember that one as especially cold.  There were short episodes of being snowed in, waiting for several days for the county plows to get to our little road.  We all went a bit stir crazy and were more than ready for spring.

March finally rolled around.  The snow was melting and on days when the sun was shining the air hinted at warmer weather.  But March was a capricious month.

One day the breeze would be warm and balmy and you might even catch sight of a robin, the next it would be gray and threatening snow.

One Sunday afternoon while my father was trying to nap, my siblings and I were encouraged to go for a hike.  We decided on Birch Hill as our destination.  It was far enough away to keep us out of doors for several hours, but not such a lengthy walk that Cass, my six year old sister, would get tired half way there.

Things were a bit wet and muddy, but most of the snow was gone.

We started off through the open alfalfa field, making our way to the adjoining meadow.  The sun shone with the soft light of spring, making everything seem muted and fuzzy around the edges.  Fluffy white clouds were scattered across the pale blue sky.

A slight breeze ruffled our hair, now free of winter's wool stocking caps.  We could see the faintest hint of green beneath last year's dead meadow grass and buds were just beginning to swell on the red dogwood branches.  Bird songs filled the air and everything smelled of new life.

We had never before paid attention to the all of the changes spring brings.  The meadow sloped gently upwards, rising gradually, and suddenly the bright white trunks of the birch trees were visible.  The small grove of white paper birch looked slightly out of place, almost as though the trees had been intentionally planted there.  No other birch trees could be found anywhere else on the property, just this small grove in the midst of cotton woods, oaks, and elms.

As we approached the grove it appeared as though there were purple balls scattered beneath the trees, even on top of the patches of snow, but upon closer inspection we realized the purple balls were actually flowers -- tiny, velvet, upside down purpl
