THE POSITIVE SIDE OF LIFE

~ Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun every year.
~ How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you're on.

~ Birthdays are good for you; the more you have, the longer you live.
~ Happiness comes through doors you didn't even know you left open.

~ Most of us go to our grave with our music still inside of us.

~ Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

~ Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

~ We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, some have weird names,
and all are different colors....but
they all exist very nicely in the same box.

~ A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Have an awesome day, and know that someone who thinks you're great has thought about you today!..

And that person was me.
Have A Super Day
Let Positive Vibes Fill Your Whole Day

The shape of things ... thelightbulb!

American architect Louis HenrySullivan had it right in 1896, when he said, 'Form ever follows function.'Most of the can't-life-without items in our homes follow that principle. The coffee mug's protruding handle protects our fingers; toil paper rolls arounda tube so it's easy to grab; and well, you get the idea.

The genius of today's lightbulb isnot in its shell, as you might suspect, but in its light-producing core. The first bulbs used carbon rods to conduct electricity. But these wereshort-burning, expensive, and too bright for indoors. Then, in 1879,Thomas Edison used carbonized bamboo (a predecessor of tungsten) for thefilament, resulting in bulbs that were cheaper, more muted, andlonger-lasting.A light-bulb moment, indeed!

That is such exciting news!!! California celebrated a new Chapter two years ago.I wanted so to go to the insitution of Trinity Star UD, but alas it was in snowcountry and it was March and there was snow. (too much for me to feel savedriving in the dark on the way home) I did go to the Trinity Star, #650 firstbirthday party and am hoping, weather permitting, to go their second birthdayparty. It is very good to hear of a new chapter with 4 petitions already inwaiting.
Keep up the good work!

Theshape of things ... thezipper!

Imagine getting out of the door on time with without this quiet achiever! As recently as a century ago, women were still using hooks and clasps to fastentheir clothes. Finally, in 1913, Gideon Sundback, a Swedish engineerworking in the United States, invented the 'Hookless Number Two,' which joinedand separated tow rows of spring clips (today's ) via a slide mechanism, interlocking them to produce a flexible closure - and sighs of relief the worldover. The occasional zipper may get stuck, but Sandback's design lasts tothisday.

Theshape of things ... the bottlecap!

Throughout the 19th century, carbonated beverages were sealed with cork butstill lost their fizz.Enter the crown bottle cap, introduced by inventorWilliam Painter in 1892.The crimped edge locks onto the bottle's mouth, and a compressible cork disk on the underside of the cap prevents air - andbubbles - from leaking out.

Theshape of things ... the paper clip!

First there was ribbon, then pins.Surely there was a better way to keeppapers together.American Samuel B. Fay patented a clip in 1867, but hisdesign still snagged. Then, in the 1890's, the double-oval design, firstproduced by the British company Gem Manufacturing, took over as the desktopstaple that still keeps our papers in place.

Carvs. Deer:Prevention Tips

Washington State has seen an increase in the number of deer-related collisionsover the last several years.During deer season, October through December, there is increased movement of the deer population. The increased vehicletraffic and increased movement in deer population during these months increasesa driver's chances of being involved in a deer-relatedcollision.

Deer are not just found in rural or wooded areas, but a significant number ofdeer-related collisions occur on busy highways near cities.Deer oftenmove in groups; if you see one deer, more than likely there are other deer inthe vicinity. The following precautions are recommended in order to avoiddeer-related collisions.

- Pay close attention to deer crossing signs which indicate heavy deer populatedareas.Drive with caution through these posted areas and when travelingthrough areas where roads divide agricultural fields fromforestland.

- Do not rely on deer whistles, deer fences, and reflectors to deter deer; theyhave not been proved to be very effective.

_ When driving at night, use high-beam headlights when oncoming traffic is notpresent.Using the high-beam headlights will better illuminate the areaand the eyes of the deer.Remember, deer seldom travel alone; when onedeer is present, there are likely more in the vicinity.

- Using caution when driving from sunset to mid-night and during the hoursshortly before and after sunrise. These are the highest risk times fordeer-related collisions.

- Deer are unpredictable. If a deer is in or near your path of travel, brake firmly but stay in your lane. Many serious accidents occur whendrivers swerve to avoid a deer and collide with an oncoming vehicle or losecontrol of their own vehicle.

- if your vehicle does collide with a deer, do not exit the vehicle.Aninjured and frightened deer is unpredictable and dangerous.Instead, callthe Washington State Patrol or local Sheriff's Department and report theaccident.

**Washington Governmental Entity Pool, Winter 2008.

And now in our area with the snow so deep, the deertend to walk down the middle of the roads ... whether it be the highways orside-roads.A couple of days ago, Ted was out clearing our frontage roadwith Lil Blu (tractor) and the snowblower!A yearling deer came off a sideroad, onto the highway, saw Ted and started up the highway, turned around, wentdown the highway ... several times. It was so confused and to get off themain drag would have been disastrous. The snow is so deep.Thankfully, no logging trucks or 'chip' trucks were barreling down theroad!I hear them at night going lickady-split and I know that they couldNEVER stop in time to save one of those animal's lives!Anyway ... Takecare!

The shape of things .. thepencil!

For nearly 445 years, this schoolhousestaple has taken the same basic form:a core of graphite encased in ahollowed-out tube of wood.Earlier writing instruments - fine-tippedbrushes, quills, and, later, graphite wrapped in rope - couldn't compete withthis design, which has been around since at least 1565, when it was firstdescribed in a book about fossils.

Startthe Month with St. Brigit

February 1st, is the feast day of St Brigit, second only to St. Patrick inIrelandand patron of poets, blacksmiths, healers, midwives, dairymaids, and newborns.Snow on her daywas thought to indicate a wet spring, whereas sunshine prognosticated ore snowuntil May.Either way, Brigit’s day is considered the start of spring inIreland, the legend being that shedipped her finger in the brook to release the hen that hatched the cold.In 18th-centuryScotland, women made Brigit’s bed onthe eve of February 2nd, saying ‘Bride is here, bride is welcome!’ to ensurecontinued fertility.

·Speaking of hens, haveyour ordered your spring chicks yet?

·St.Brigit’s ribbon, wornaround the head, was said to cure a headache. To affect the same remedytoday, try soaking a ribbon in lavender waterfirst.

·Turn mattresses now, plump feather beds and pillows, and sprinkle some lavender water onpillowcases.Sprigs of lavender in the linen closet bring spring a littlecloser.

·InIrelands, alittle straw cross called St. Brigit’s bow is tucked into the thatch roof toprotect a house.Hang the same on your door, and perhaps get your chimneyswept now as well.

·For fertility, add kelpor dulse to your diet, quit smoking, increase your zinc (found in leafy greenvegetables, fish, nuts, and wheat germ), and maintain a good supply of vitaminC.

The shape of things ... the qwertykeyboard!

Why are keyboard letters arranged insuch a weird configuration? To make sense of their placement, think backto the first typewrite. When American inventor Christopher Sholes and histeam were developing the machine in 1867, the most frequently used keys keptjamming together. After much arrangement and rearranging, they finallyplaced the letters in their current pattern, referred to as 'qwerty.' for theletter-key sequence at the top left!(Yes, it could have beenpoiu, but try pronouncing that!)

INTERESTING

I wonder how many people know about this....
~ A 36 yearold female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her car. A resident ofKilgore,Texasshe was traveling between Gladewater&Kilgore. It was raining, though not excessively, when her car suddenlybegan to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She was not seriouslyinjured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!

When she explained tothe highway patrolman what had happened he told her something that every drivershould know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She thoughtshe was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safeconsistent speed in the rain.
But the highwaypatrolman told her that if the cruise control is on when your car begins tohydro-plane and your tires lose contact with the pavement, your car willaccelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane. Shetold the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred.
The patrolman said thiswarning should be listed, on the driver's seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THE CRUISECONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY, along with the airbag warning. We tellour teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed - but we don'ttell
them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry.

The only person theaccident victim found, who knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who hadhad a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries.

NOTE:Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set thecruise control when the windshield wipers are on.Hmmm! And we have aToyota Sienna Limited XLE and we thought we had a problem as every time itrained, the cruise control went off!We checked the book … and alas! The answer!Sure is awonderful feature!(Thanks,Glynis!)

AForce to be Used

ByMWB Rod Larson, Grand Master of Minnesota, 1993

Every man who has taken thedegrees of Masonry and then gone on to apply those principles to his life knowsthat there is a Masonic Force. He knows because he has experienced it. We knowthat the force of Masonry is real because we see and feel its effects on thelives of Masons and non-masons.

Weknow it is real, but how can we describe it in plain words? The ancientGreekphilosophers defined the four cardinal virtues, temperance, fortitude, prudence, and justice. These are discussed at length in our ritual. To these we have addeda fifth Masonic virtue, tolerance. We become so concerned about keeping theorganization alive that we forget the ideas and ideals that gave it birth. Webegin by having a great idea forcing our thinking and acting into new channelsand we end by serving the organization.

Freemasonryis not the formal procedures that we see in our rituals, ceremonies, constitutions, by-laws, regulations, edicts, meeting agendas, training programs, application forms, organizational structures, etc. True Freemasonry resides inthe hearts and minds of those that love it and practice its ideals. Freemasonrymust be a Force to be used and Not a Form to be served.

Point of NoReturn

By WBWally Zink

Whether we are ready for it or not, someday it will all come to an end. Therewill be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.

All of the things we have collected, whether treasured or forgotten will pass onto someone else. Our wealth, fame, temporal power will shrivel toirrelevance. It will be of littlevalue what we owned or what we saved.

Our grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will evaporate like fog in the morningsun. So too will our ambitions, plans and our to-do-lists willexpire.

The wins andlosses that once seemed so important will fade away.In the end it will matter little wherewe came from, or on what side of the tracks we were born.It will not matter a whit if we werebeautiful, brilliant or slow in learning.Even our gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what willhonestly matter? How will the valueof our days be measured? It willnot matter what we bought, but what we build; not what we got but what wegave. What will matter will not beour success, but our significance.

What willmatter is not what we learned, but what we taught. What will matter is every act ofintegrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered orencouraged others to emulate our example.

What willmatter is not our competence, but our character. What will matter is not how many peoplewe knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when we are gone. What will matter is how long we will beremembered, by whom and for what reasons. We are all on a journey that has a destiny, but no return.

Note: WB Wally Zink passed out the West gatelastDecember.May he be long remembered.

WB Zink is indeed, one of my favoritestory writers! You will notice that I have copied many ofhis stories!

"The real question, after all, is not as to the quantity of life, but itsquality; its depth, its purity, its fortitude, its fitness of spirit and gestureof soul. Hence the insistent emphasis of Masonry upon the building of characterand the practice of righteousness; upon that moral culture without which man isrudimentary, and that spiritual vision without intellect is the slave of greedor passion. What makes a man great and free of soul, here or anywhere, isloyalty to the laws of right, of truth, of purity, of love, and the lofty willof God."

A man limped into ahospital to have his foot X-rayed, and was asked to wait for the results. Sometime later an orderly appeared and handed the man a large pill.
Just then a mother witha small child in need of immediate attention entered. After the orderlydisappeared with the new patient, the man hobbled over to get a glass of water, swallow the pill, and sat down to wait. Some time later the orderly reappearedcarrying a bucket of water.

"Okay," he said, "Let'sdrop the pill in this bucket and soak your foot for a while."

Checking out of thegrocery store, I noticed that the bag boy was eyeing my two adopted childrencuriously. They often draw scrutiny, since my son's a blond Russian, while mydaughter has shiny black Haitian skin.
The boy continuedstaring as he carried our groceries to the car. Finally, he asked, "Are thoseyour kids?"
"Yes, they are!" Ianswered proudly.
"They adopted?" heasked.
"Yes," Ireplied.
"I thought so," heconcluded. "I figured you're too old to have kids thatsmall."

Tom retired in his early50s and started a second career. However, even though he loved his new job, hejust couldn't seem to get to work on time. Every day, he was 5, 10 sometimeseven 15 minutes late.
But he was a good workerand really sharp, so his boss was in a quandary about how to deal with it.Finally, one day, his boss called him into the office for a talk.
'Tom, I must tell you, Itruly like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job, but being late for work nearlyevery day is quite annoying to me as well as your fellow workers.'
Tom replied, 'Yes,sir, I know I'm sorry, but I am working on it.'
'That's what Ilike to hear,' his boss said. 'However, the fact that you consistently come towork late does puzzle me, because I understand that you retired from the UnitedStates Air Force, and they have some pretty rigid rules about tardiness. Isn'tthat correct?'
'Yes. I did retirefrom the Air Force, and I'm mighty proud ofit!'said Tom.
'Well, what didthey say when you came in late?' asked his boss.
'They said,'Good morning, General'.'
