Sadness in Massachusetts … Passing of PGM Kitty Campbell, 1971-72

Cyber Chat’s Inbox

Sisters and Brothers -

As of this moment, 4:30 PM on Thursday, May 1, there has been no further information on Sister Kitty Campbell's arrangements. For those of you who did not know, Sister Georgeanna K. Campbell, PGM, died in her sleep on Tuesday, April 22.  She was living in a residential home in California near her nephew Roger and his wife.

There were tentative arrangements for calling hours to be tomorrow evening, Friday, May 2, with the funeral on Saturday morning.  Unless we hear otherwise, I believe that is no longer valid.  I have left a message with the Funeral Director to call me, as well as having spoken with the family, to let us know the arrangements.

Roger and Lorrie Ball live at 6757 Cavite Court, San Diego, CA 92120.  I am sure cards will be appreciated.   As further information is received it will be passed on.

News from Wisconsin GC …

Hi Connie, I'm from Wisconsin.  When we initiate we always have at least two.  So if we only have one "real", we will have a courtesy candidate also.   As are most grand chapters (as General Grand Chapter is finally starting to realize and do something about), Wisconsin has been having declining membership for many years.  At our high we had around 64,000 members.  The people are still available, but it's attracting them to Star.  Technology and the increase in school sports are both problems, but we should prevail!  Wisconsin Grand Chapter has really committed itself to membership.  All the Grand Line participates in membership meetings.  Hopefully things should start turning around.  Our increase this year (the first year of a heavily promoted membership program) should be greater than other years with no program, which was our goal!

Hugs, Elaine (Engelke)

PS, I'm working with our Visionquest Committee member PGM Phyllis Eklov to try and get General Grand Chapter to create a DVD about star that we can show at membership meetings and give to prospective members.   Freemasonry has several DVD's and Star should have at least one!   (AMEN!  I second that!!)

Great writing opportunity …
. . . . But I found something that I thought some of you might be interested in. Reader's Digest is accepting stories based on people giving back and inspiring others. Now I know, first hand, that there are a lot of inspiring folks in our organization. And I also know there are lots of wonderful writers out there, so sit down and give it a shot. For each story, the Reader’s Digest Foundation will donate $100,000 to a nonprofit organization that is associated either with the story or the cause. I am constantly telling you that I am surrounded by heroes- and that doesn’t mean just the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coasties- I mean each of you who have done so much for me and mine during the past several years. So sit down and tell the world about someone who has touched your life and the life of others. For more information go to the Reader's Digest website and look for "Make It Matter".

QUESTION (to Ill Bro. William R. Miller, 33°, SGIG, Orient of Washington) Is there anything like this in our Jurisdiction?  The below message is from Wisconsin!  Hate to put this in the STARS only to have the Scottish Rite Offices bombarded!

See you in about 8 weeks (Grand Lodge).

Connie

(From Wisconsin …)  ‘The Supreme Council of Scottish Rite Masonry has and continues to make available copies of the “Freemasonry and the Fabric of America” Lee Sherman Dreyfus DVD without cost to any Mason or Masonic organization.   This is a great video with former Gov. Dreyfus explaining freemasonry and edited with great images of George Washington, Franklin Roosevelt, etc.  To obtain this dvd to show at a membership event, or to lend to an interested male, contact your local Masonic lodge which should have a copy or contact your Scottish Rite Valley office.’

ANSWER:  This is unique to the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.  It is an absolutely great DVD - an excellent Masonic talk.  Gov. Dreyfus died earlier this year.  I requested a copy for each Valley and have requested that it be shown at each Reunion.  You could tell your readers that their local Scottish Rite Valley has a copy which they could borrow for a presentation at their own Chapter or Lodge.

Correction …

I was suppose to send you a note earlier and I forgot.  Anyway – on the list of meetings for the Inland Empire Past Matrons and Patrons – The May 30th meeting is the Brown Bag Auction – and the September 26th meeting is the Basket Auction.  Sorry about the mix-up.

Fun project …

Hi Sisters and Brothers, we are still working on a project begun a couple of years ago where we are compiling electronic copies of programs we are putting in a library that will soon become available to YOU for meetings.  What I would like is for you to send me (by email or US mail) copies of programs you have done at your chapter or event such as a Grand Representative party.   If you have already sent me copies, you don’t need to do so again, but if you are in doubt, go ahead and send it.  I am also typing up the Life Member Tributes and Memorial Services from past proceedings to be shared with all of us.  They make wonderful present-day programs.  Any time I find a Grand Chapter program in a proceeding, honoring officers, such as Chaplain, Warder, Star Point(s), Organist, etc. I am typing those up also.  Eventually these will all be made available to you electronically (or we can send you a copy).  The email group for General Grand Chapter is also starting a web-based library for these programs.   Examples of things I have already are memorial services, 50 year member tributes, a sideliner’s program, Holiday Bingo, Turkey Hunt, Scavenger Hunt, Funny “Fashion Show” (by Pat Lee), Inspiration of the Labyrinth, “Fairy Godmother” skit (put on at Mr. & Mrs. OES a few years ago), Seven Wonders of the World Skit (put on at Members’ Lunch at Grand Chapter a few years ago), and a How to on doing a Cake Walk at your chapter.  And many more.  Below is an example of a list of Break the Ice Games we have:

Break the Ice Games:

Fill out a list of items about yourself, i.e. date of birth, favorite dessert, actress, TV show, song, etc.  Then go around the room and try to match up the most items with other peoples’ lists.  The person with the most matches wins!

Go around the room and each person states something about themselves such as “I have three grandkids”, “I have cruised in Alaska”, I spent my first anniversary in Hawaii”.  Everyone who has also done the same thing gets a chip.  At the end of going around the group one or two times, the person with the most chips wins.

Everyone puts the name of a famous person, living or dead or make-believe, on their back and they go around the room and ask questions about who they are (they don’t know) and the first person who guesses who they are wins.  You can do this more than once if someone guesses too quickly.

Scattories:  Everyone uses the letter of their first name.  Everyone is given the same list and you need to fill it out with an answer that starts with the letter of your first name.  For example, my name is Elaine.  A category could be Food: Egg plant or vehicle: electric car.  Have 15 or 20 categories.  Either time, it and the first one done wins or first one with most full wins.

So:  you get the idea.  Now, PLEASE, send me your skits, games, programs, ideas, and even requests for ideas!!!  Also, remember the category of Membership and include things you have done for a membership program.  Thanks!  Plus, some of you have programs about the way things were done in the “olden days” such as the way Star Points balloted or the old memorial service, etc.  Those make interesting programs.  Remember, if you don’t want to type, you can also scan items and send them to me, or at least tell me the year of the proceedings and I will find one.  Thanks.

** Idea from OES Email Blast, WI

Web-can site …

While we were in Hawaii, our neighbor in Newport, alerted us to this web-can site that he and his family used while vacationing last year.  Brother Al Jorgensen decided, while walking one morning, call his daughters:  Teresa (WM, Cyclamen Chapter) and Suzanne and have them link up to this web-can site, and then he proceeded to wave at his grand-children.  Pretty cool!  You need to try it!  Of course, I am not guaranteeing who you will be seeing!  It definitely will NOT be Brother Al!  LOL!  Of course, when Ted and Al saw this statue the first time while doing their morning MILES walk, Ted told me you had to push on its belly-button to get it activated.  WRONG!

Back home …

Just to let you know that I finally come home from the Everett Rehab.    I was given a hip replacement surgery so spent a month at Rehab learning how to do the things I used to take for granted.   Heck, I’m 85 years old & should be able to put on a pair of socks.     WRONG.    I still can’t put them on but Hubby, Ed, does a mighty fine job of it.   He also does everything else, along with worrying that I’m not doing things right and safe enough.   He’s wonderful to have around.

Thanks to all for their cards & phone calls & visits.   Everything was appreciated.

Star Love.

Prayers needed … PGM Sylvia Webster

Thursday evening Sylvia collapsed and was unconscious. Her granddaughter was with her, and got her up and into a chair, where she fainted again. Jessica got her to the hospital, and she is still there. She was in the ER all day Friday with a possible heart attack and urinary tract infection. Because Jessica was in a panic, she didn't get Sylvia's cell phone to her until Saturday evening. She called us Sunday morning. She will have more tests today. She is in room 429A at Northern Colorado Medical Center, #1-970-352-4121. Her granddaughter is living at her house. We have no further information at this time.

Chewelah resident done good!  … Kay Andrist

Kathryn “Kay” Lind  Andrist of  St. Joseph’s Long Term Care, Chewelah, was recently selected winner of the 24th  Annual Celebrate Life Pageant sponsored by The Spokane Chapter of the Washington State Association of Activity Professionals.

This event is held to honor our senior residents living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities in the community.  Their interesting lives, histories and wonderful personalities are a joy they share with us.

The eleven contestants were judged on life accomplishments, personality and enthusiasm by a panel of five judges involved with senior issues around the state.  All contestants lives were celebrated this day, however the winner goes on to represent all senior citizens during the Lilac Festival, including the Royal Court Luncheon and the Torchlight Parade.

Kay was born near Priest River Idaho.  The family later moved to a farm in Addy, WA where she and her four brothers grew up.  She attended school in Colville and studied architecture at WSU.

Following WWII, Kay and her husband Dr. Charles Andrist opened a veterinary clinic in Chewelah. Kay raised four children, assisted her husband in the clinic and managed the bookkeeping. Using her architectural training, Kay designed the blueprints for remodeling their house.

Kay and her husband enjoyed league bowling for many years as well as snow and water skiing.  They were original members of the Chewelah Ski Association.

Kay’s life has been dedicated to public service.  She was active in 4-H, Boy and Girl Scouts, Job’s Daughters, served as PTA President and helped award educational scholarships to high school students.   She helped to build floats, and get marching bands, kids and horses to the community events like the Lilac Parade.

Kay was active in Community Celebrations and Soroptimists, where she was instrumental in organizing the Mayfly Massacre race.  She is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and was an avid fund raiser for the Shriner’s Hospital.

Kay remains active in local politics and has served as Precinct Officer for over thirty years. Kay’s response to voting apathy in this county is summed up by this quote: “Use it or lose it!”

Congratulations Kay on a life well lived.  One most worthy of celebrating!

Thank you from Sister Alma Michelson …

(5/3)    I was talking to Alma Michelson couple days ago and she was so excited about all the cards being sent to her following her fall at Analia Friday night, she asked me to send you an email and express her thanks to all for them.  So, here is a little bit that you might use for your Newsletter.  Change it however you want.

Don

At Marcia Beck’s Co-Chairman of Deputy Instructors Honor Night, it finished in a slightly unforeseen manner in that Alma Michelson turned her ankle and went down on the cement floor for a tough landing.  She was ambulanced to the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, and they found that she had two tiny cracks in the rotator cup of her left shoulder.  She went in again on Thursday and her doctor reconfirmed the damage, but said that if she behaves herself, she’d be good as new in about 6 months.  So she cannot go for any long road-trips, and has to keep her left arm more immobile than usual.

She is in good spirits and asked that her sincere thanks and love go to all that have been sending her cards.  She has never been in this position before, and is overwhelmed with the number of cards she has received.  She has been Nesika’s Sunshine Chairman for years, and as a result of this fall, she now understands that cards really do help in the healing process and she did not realize the significance of the cards before.  She will continue this job with more insight, and can really empathize with others when under the weather.  Again, she could not say enough to all for the great cards that have been sent to her.  I think she is stringing or setting them all in a prominent place in her house so she can review them again and again. Her last words to me was to tell everyone   “Thank you – thank you -- thank you”.

I didn’t think that any one person could reap so many praises on those who are trying to cheer her up.  Believe me, the cards are helping her immensely and Nesika THANKS YOU for sharing your good graces with Alma.  We really think she is great.

** Don Beck, PGP
