RAIN

I opened my eyes
And looked up at the rain,
And it dripped in my head
And flowed into my brain,
And all that I hear as I lie in my bed
Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head

I step very softly,
I walk very slow,
I can't do a handstand--
I might overflow,
So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said--
I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.

Passing of PGM, CO

Not only Ruxton Chapter but all who knew her will be saddened by the passing of Past Grand Matron Dorcus Rhodes. She had been in a Nursing Home in Colorado Springs for several years. When I saw her at Easter, you could tell that she was not doing as well as in the past. Then when I went just after Christmas, the nurses informed me she had passed away some time during the summer, but really couldn't remember exactly when. We had never seen an
obituary for her. The staff said that the family didn't put one in the paper. She was a wonderful, kind, and positive lady and will be missed very much.

Sadness at Adelphi Chapter, Spokane

Connie,   just wanted to let you know that Andy (Hansen) passed away from bone cancer on November 21st.  It was a blessing for him, as he had been in a lot of pain for several months.  He was able to be at home for 11 months.  We miss him terribly, but know he is in a better pain-free place.

** Linda Hansen, PM

(Andy was a PP of Adelphi Chapter and a very active Shriner!  He will be missed!)

Thank you Chehalis and Centralia Chapters...

I just want to say Thank you to Chehalis #3 and Centralia #14. My mom, husband and I visited your Official Visit this past Monday, and were very well welcomed and truly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you Sister Marge, WGM, for "vouching" for us, it's always a pleasure to be able to sit chapter with you, whether here in Washington or back home in our district in Ohio. We look forward to visiting with other chapters as we wonder around the area. We are currently camping in Long Beach, WA and will be here for a couple more weeks, so who knows where we will turn up next.

Interesting... News from a Colorado Chapter

Centennial Chapter #58 is hosting a My Gold Party on January 20th at the Colorado Springs Masonic Center prior to start of our regular meeting.

Bring your old, unused, unwanted gold jewelry (broken, mismatched, scratched---condition doesn't matter, as long as it's gold – no silver, sterling silver, or costume jewelry- but if in doubt, bring it in. Your jewelry will be tested to determine gold content and value).

Arrive at least 30 minutes- 45 minutes early, to have time to check in your gold prior to start of our meeting which starts at 7:00 p.m. (your check payment will be ready by end of meeting) you will get paid a top price --- cash on the spot "for your "old gold" –stuff you'll never wear, and which is just taking up room in your dresser/jewelry box!! Note you don't have to except the offer for your gold.

So, look around your house and jewelry boxes, how many single earrings, broken chains, old watches, or rings you will never wear?? You get the idea. Turn these unwanted items into cash instead. If you have any questions, please call Sister Robin Fraser, 719-641-7892 rep for MyGoldParty.

You don't have to be a member to come to the Party, so bring your friends we would love to have members stay for the meeting but understand if your schedule dose not permit.

News from Utah...

Clara Barton is my dual chapter. My husband and I were installed as WM & WP (2nd time) in November. I am thrilled to report that we will be initiating 1, and possibly 2 new members on January 16 at our Grand Lecturer's visit. The first candidate is the daughter of a wonderful, active couple in the Salt Lake area. She decided that since her father is a Grand Officer this year perhaps now is a good time to join. That ballot was approved at our November meeting.

I suspect the second candidate saw one of our "advertisements" in a little booklet the chapter produces quarterly - "Green Lined" - which advertises businesses that try to be "green" in Cache Valley. They give us the information they want printed and pay an advertising fee; we then write the copy and produce the booklet. The money from this project pays for the printing (a portion of which is donated by one of the "green" businesses), and the remainder goes to the local Boys & Girls Club as our donation to the local community. We print a two page introduction to Masonry & the Masonic Family of Organizations in the center of this booklet, with contact information on the inside back cover. The booklets are given to the green businesses and other local popular stores for free distribution.

Though this has been an ambitious undertaking for our little group, it has been very satisfying in its results. It's one way to advertise not only who we are, but what we stand for, and what good things are happening in our community. It's a lot of difficult work - I hope we'll be able to continue it. This 2nd candidate will be balloted upon at our stated meeting on January 8. I suspect there will be no problem with her ballot and petition either, so our secretary has her on stand-by.

News from an Oregon Chapter...

A few years ago we were going to make a donation to the local Free Medical Clinic as one of our community projects. We decided to do a spaghetti dinner and sell tickets ahead of time. When they were informed that we were going to do this for them, they got on the band wagon and started selling the tickets.

It really made a huge difference in the profit and number of people who attended. We ran out of food and had to go buy more to feed everyone. Think we only charged $5.00 and gave them a check for $800.00.

And a message from Oklahoma...

The Crab dinner sounds great.  Wish I could be there since the wife and I both love Crab meat.  All I can say about how, is that you need the support of the community as much as possible.  Advertise as much as possible and ensure that you let everyone know if you are working for a charity or for the chapter.  If you are working for a charity, then be sure that the Chamber of Commerce knows, the City Council, the police dept., the fire department, the various banks.  Try to make contact with all of these organizations in person.  This ensures that they are able to see the dedication and enthusiasm for your cause.  Be sure to carry with you posters that you can put on the bulletin boards before you leave, and be sure that you have tickets on your person to sell at the time of the visit or to leave on consignment.  You will be surprised as to how many you will sell, especially at the banks, in mass.  Banks will normally buy a number and then give them to the employees.  These are just a few of the ideas that have worked for us in the past.  We cannot expect the other chapters and lodges to support each other on these types of projects without having the majority of the support coming from the community.  Besides, they are already members and we need to show the outside world that we are GREAT cooks and really do do good for the community.  Thanks and hope this helps.

Ready, Set, Shred

What do you need to keep?  And what can you shred?  Here are some tips:

Ø  Bank records:  Keep deposit and withdrawal slips until you get your bank statement each month.  Retain monthly statements for seven years in case the IRS audits you.  Ditch CD records after the accounts mature and you collect the interest you’re due.  The same advice applies to loan documents after you’ve paid back all the money that you borrowed, with one exception.  Don’t burn your mortgage after you’ve paid it off.  Keep it as proof of how much you paid for your house so you can calculate the tax, if any, on your gain when you sell it.

Ø  Investment account documents:  Shred monthly and quarterly statements, but keep annual statements for seven years.  If you still hold stocks in certificate form, ask your broker to hold them for you electronically.

Ø  Retirement-plan records:

Have you ever?

-      Have you ever said:  “That meeting was sooooo boring?’

-      Have you ever said: ‘I wish I didn’t have to go tonight?’

-      Have you ever said: ‘I’m the only one who does anything?’

-      Have you ever said: ‘I’d rather be doing housework?’

-      Have you ever said: ‘Why doesn’t the WM pick something a bit more flattering?’

-      Have you ever said: ‘There is too much to learn I can’t do it!’

-      Have you ever said: ‘Those people are so picky and petty?’

-      Have you ever said:  ‘Someone is always correcting my mistakes?’

-      Have you ever said these things in the earshot of family and friends who are NOT members of the Order?

-      If so, why should they join you in such a miserable lifestyle?

-      If you are not enjoying yourself, why would they?

-      That is why they are not coming in.  Your attitude reflects the Order.  You may have enjoyed yourself many times.  You may be so glad you are there once you get there.  But do you say these things to others?

-      Do you keep speaking the negative and keep the positive to yourself?

-      Change your attitude around and the Order will turn around with you!

-      Have some fun in your Chapter and tell others about it.  Don’t expect the members who don’t dome to hear about the good times by leaning into the wind.

-      Let them know what is going on in your bulletins.  Not just a list of dates and times.  Give a hint of what is going to happen.

-      Make it interesting enough so that YOU want to come.  They will start to come, too!

2010 Census to Begin

WARNING: 2010 Census Cautions from the Better Business Bureau

Be Cautious About Giving Info to Census Workers by Susan Johnson

With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data. The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:

** If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions.  However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home.

** Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address informationDo not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. . Census.

REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.

While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION

The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations.  Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.

AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION.  No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau. Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that  are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

PLEASE SHARE THIS INFO WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.

Weather Trivia

Q:  What is the cloudiest location in the United States?

A:  The Aleutian Islands.

Q:  What type of cloud has been mistaken for a UFO?

A:  A lenticular cloud which is saucer shaped.

Q:  Does the relative humidity have to be 100% for rain to occur?

A:  In the clouds it does, but it does not at the ground.

Q:  What trapped the Conner Party in the Sierra?
A:  A blizzard in October 1846.

Q:  A warm spell after autumn’s first freeze or frost is called what?

A:  Indian Summer.

On October 7th, 1902, a waterspout was seen off Cape May, NJ.  When the first chilly air masses of fall, cross warm bodies of water, waterspouts form!  (When I was a wee lass ... and still taking naps {prior to grade school, I would assume}, when I laid down, the sun was shining.  When I got up the water was at the outside top step of our back porch and the sun was still shining!  Whoa!  Water is unreliable, boy howdy!  There was a gully washer above our house during a ‘rain shower’!  Right now, our county, as well as those surrounding us in both WA and ID, are having minor flooding.  We are fine ... the river is great as it gets its water from Flathead Lake in MT ... it is just all this rain on top of frozen ground!  But do believe that the frost is coming out of the ground as we speak.  The local state and county roads are getting a bit whoopee ... like a mini roller coaster ... as we ride over the frost heaves.)

Chaplain’s Corner

(Dr. Charles W. Edwards, Jr., National Chaplain, Disabled American Veterans)

The Road to Success

The road to success is not straight.  There are: curves called failure; loops called confusion; speed bumps called friends; caution lights called family; and red lights called graves.

You will have flats called jobs.  But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver called God, our Father, you will make it to a place called success.

Be more concerned with what God thinks about you than what people think of you.

Yes, it is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.

Happiness keeps you sweet.  Trials keep you strong.

Sorrows keep you human.  Failures keep you humble.

Success keeps you glowing; but only God keeps you going, because you are special!

Remember, we can do all things as it relates to success through our God who gives strength to all of us.

Yes, the power to hold on in spite of everything, the power to endure, this is the winner’s quality and the road to success.

I extend to all of you God’s blessings for this another new year, 2010.

News from Manito Lodge No. 246, Spokane

Happy New Year Brethren,

I hope 2010 is off to a great start for you.

Manito Lodge #246 will be holding an Appendent Bodies Night for its February stated meeting on Monday, February 8 at 7pm; and I am looking for volunteers from each of the Appendent Bodies (Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shrine, Grotto, etc.) to say a few words about the body they are representing.

In the past, the Lodge has had separate meetings dedicated to each of the individual appendent bodies; but this year I’ve decided to hold one appendent bodies night and give representatives from each of those appendent bodies between 5 and 6 minutes (depending on how many attend) to speak about the body they are representing.

If you would like to participate, or have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me or call me at (509) 951-1263.

            Again, happy 2010 to all!

Fraternally,

** Ryan Leonard, WM

In Utah

MWB Glen Cook, a Salt Lake criminal defense attorney, is believed to be the first member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be elected Grand Master in Utah.  His recent installation garnered an article in the Deseret Morning News and wide coverage on the Internet.

Although the first Utah Lodge was warranted in 1859, by 1925 tension between the Church and the Grand Lodge of Utah lead to an amendment to their Masonic Code precluding a member of the church from being initiated into Freemasonry.  This prohibition was removed in 1984.

In Cuba

Fidel Castro recounts that when he was captured by Cuban National Guardsmen after the storming of the Moncada in 1953, he was sure that this was the end of him.  Ordinarily he would have been taken out into an alleyway and shot in the back of the head.  His comrade however, gave a peculiar Masonic sign to their captors and the commandante was summoned.  Their summary execution was stayed and they were taken prisoner and brought to trial.  Castro was imprisoned until an amnesty was declared and he was released.  Today, with over 200 lodges and some 30,000 members, Freemasonry is alive and well in Cuba, although Castro isn’t a member.

HANDY HINTS

*        Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store.   If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

*        Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil.   It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!

*        Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating.   Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

*        Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef.   It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

*        To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.

*        For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.

*        Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.

*        Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them   in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350   for 15 minutes!!!  Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream. Yummm!

*        Reheat Pizza:  Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm.  This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.

*        Easy Deviled Eggs:  Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up.  Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, and cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg.  Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.

*        Expanding Frosting: When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer   for a few minutes. You can double it in size.  You get to frost more cake/cupcakes   with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.

*        Reheating refrigerated bread:  To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food   moist and help it reheat faster.

*        Newspaper weeds away:  Start putting in your plants; work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.

*        Broken Glass:  Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.

*        No More Mosquitoes:  Place a dryer sheet in your pocket.   It will keep the mosquitoes away.

*        Squirrel Away!   To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper.   The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

*        Flexible vacuum:  To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel   roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

*        Reducing Static Cling:  Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt   or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose.   Place pin in seam of slacks and ... ta da! .... Static is gone.

*        Measuring Cups:  Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water.    Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

*        Foggy Windshield?   Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

*        Reopening envelopes:  If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.

*        Conditioner:  Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and   leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you   bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.

*        Goodbye Fruit Flies:  To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar   and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the   cup and gone forever!

*        Get Rid of Ants:  Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't   digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works   and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

*        INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS:  The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the   dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he   took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material ... I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well ...  the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us   that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that's what burns out the heating unit.   You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free ... that nice fragrance too. You know how they can feel   waxy when you take them out of the box ... well this stuff builds up on your clothes   and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your   house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very longtime (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with   hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months.   He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?!   Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that.   So, I thought I'd share!
Note:   I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran   through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it   with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it ... the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about!

JOKES

It was raining quite hard as U.S. Marine trainees assembled outdoors for a briefing. On a blackboard, the lieutenant instructor had prepared a detailed drawing of the tactics he wanted practiced.

"Don't think we're going to call this off just because of a little rain," he said.

Then he turned to the blackboard which had been washed clean.

What your baby would tell you if he could talk:
1. I have my blankie, you have your caffeine. Enough said.
2. Don't be jealous, but I think I'm in love with the ceiling fan.
3. I know where the remote control is, but it'll cost you.
4. To you, it's just an empty egg carton; to me it's PlayStation 2.
5. Actually, I don't mind sitting in a bathtub that I've peed in.
6. Bang a screwdriver slowly and steadily into your gums. That's what teething feels like.
7. Two words I'd rather not hear from you: rectal thermometer.
8. There's no point in teaching me to say "mama" or "dada." My first word is going to be "hat."
9. I've told you five times what cow says. If you can't remember, I'm not telling you again.
10. There is no question that I can cry longer than you can listen.
11. I'm not just wildly throwing my food. I'm exploring the laws of gravity, estimating mass, and testing wind velocity.
12. If you wanted a good sleeper, you should have gotten a cat.
13. Who that baby in the mirror you keep asking me about?
14. If my bottom is so darn cute, why is someone always trying to cover it up?
15. Who are you two to tell me how important it is to sleep alone?
16. What you secretly believe is true: I am much smarter than other babies.

A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment.

The next week the man realized that he would need his wife to wake him at 5.00 am for an early flight to Sydney. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence, he finally wrote on a piece of paper, "Please wake me at 5:00 am".

The next morning the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 am, and that he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't woken him when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed.  It said...

"It is 5:00 am, wake up!"

Bernard, who is noted for his gracious manners, was awakened one morning at four forty four a.m. by his ringing telephone. . .

"Your dog's barking, and it's keeping me awake," said an angry voice.

Bernard thanked the caller and politely asked his name and number before hanging up.

The next morning at precisely four forty four a.m., Bernard called his neighbor back . . .

"Good morning, Mr. Williams.... Just called to say that I don't *have* a dog."

RECIPES

Stroganoff-Style Chicken

** Campbell’s Kitchen

2 tbsp. vegetable oil

4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves (about 1 pound), cut into strips

2 cups sliced mushrooms (about 6 ounces)

1 medium onion, chopped (about 1/2 cup)

1 can (10 3/4 ounces) Campbell's® Healthy Request® Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup

1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt

1/4 cup water

4 cups medium egg noodles, cooked without salt and drained

Paprika

Directions:  Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat.  Add the chicken and cook until well browned, stirring often.  Remove the chicken from the skillet.  Heat the remaining oil in the skillet over medium heat.  Add the mushrooms and onion and cook until they're tender.  Stir the soup, yogurt and water in the skillet and heat to a boil.  Return the chicken to the skillet.  Reduce the heat to low.  Cook until the chicken is cooked through. Sprinkle with the paprika, if desired.  Serve the chicken and sauce with the noodles. Serves 4.

Kitchen Clip:  After adding the yogurt, take care not to let the stroganoff come to a boil or the sauce will curdle. Its flavor will be fine--it just won't look as creamy.

Did you know???

1.      Marie Callender’s Chicken Pot Pie has 520 calories and 12 grams of saturated fat for HALF a pie.  If you eat the entire pie, you are talking about 1,040 calories and 24 grams of saturated fat!

2.     Olive Garden’s Tour of Italy – Homemade Lasagna, Lightly Breaded Chicken Parmigiana, and Creamy Fettuccine Alfredo – comes with 1,450 calories, 33 grams of saturated fat and 3,830 milligrams of sodium.  Add a breadstick (150 calories) and a plate of Garden-Fresh Salad with dressing (350 calories) and you’ll consume 2,000 calories in a single meal.

3.     Progresso Traditional, Vegetable Classics, and Rich & Hearty Soups are brimming with salt.  A half can average more than half of a person’s daily quota of salt.  Instead, try Progresso’s Reduced soups ... all the flavor, but up to 59% less salt than most other canned soups.

4.     Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream – a half cup serving squeezes half-a-day’s saturated fat and a third-or-a-day cholesterol into your artery walls and makes a 300-calorie down-payment on your next set of fat cells.

5.     Cheesecake Factory Chris’ Outrageous Chocolate Cake has ‘layers of moist chocolate cake, chewy brownie, toasted coconut pecan filling, and creamy chocolate chip coconut cheesecake.’  Each five-inch slice weighs ¾# and has 1,550 calories and 32 tsp. sugar.  PLUS ... 43 grams of saturated fat.  It’s as though you had ordered THREE McDonald’s Quarter Pounders for dessert.

6.     Pillsbury Grands! Cinnabon Cinnamon Roll with Icing ... has 310 calories and 2 grams of saturated fat plus 2½ grams of trans fat and 23 grams of sugar.  2½ grams of trans fat (the worst kind you can eat) may not sound like much but some health experts recommend 2 grams of trans fat as the limit for an entire day.

7.     Top Secret Movie Theater Butter Popcorn Snack Size Bags has 9 grams of bad fat, 6 of which are trans; in just one snack-size bag (6 cups popped).  Instead try Orville Redenbacher’s Smart Pop! Or Smart Balance Smart ‘N’ Healthy!; both of which are trans fat-free.

8.     Starbucks Venti (20oz) White Chocolate Mocha with 2% milk and whipped cream is more than a mere cup of coffee.  It is worse than a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese.  It has 580 calories and 15 grams of saturated fat!  You can save 130 calories and 2/3rds of the bad fat if you order it with nonfat milk and no whipped cream.

9.     Chipotle Chicken Burrito (tortilla, rice, pinto beans, cheese, chicken, sour cream and salsa) is 970 calories, 17½ grams of saturated fat, and 2,200mg of sodium ... as much as three 6” Subway BLT Classic Subs.  Get the burrito with no cheese or sour creams cuts the saturated fat to 5½ grams but is still 750 calories and more than a day’s worth of sodium.

10.   Cold Stone Creamery Gotta Have It Founder’s Favorite goes into a chocolate-dipped waffle bowl and you have not just a 12-oz, softball sized mound of ice cream, but pecans, brownie pieces, fudge and caramel, but 1,600 calories and 42 grams of saturated fat ... roughly what you would get if you polished off five single-scoop ice cream cones.

HELOISE

*        Clearing Out Holiday Leftovers:  If your refrigerator is packed with leftovers, sort newer ones and toss out older leftovers. Look into each plastic container to see if they are getting fuzzy and take a sniff test to be sure they don't smell bad.  Put a date on the top of the latest leftovers. Don't shove them into the back of the fridge because they won't get eaten.

*        Storing Mushrooms:  Put them into the refrigerator unwashed and place in a paper bag. If mushrooms go in wet they'll become slimy. The paper bag will let them breathe and they'll last longer.

*        Colorful Dip Dishes:  If you are serving several dips on a platter, use edible containers! Buy red, green or yellow bell peppers; slice off the tops and scoop out seeds and membranes inside. Then pour dips into them.

*        When Hand Washing Fine Crystal or China:  It's a good idea to wear rubber gloves. You'll have a better grip in soapy water so they don't slip out of your hands and break.

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY

The birds are frantic at the feeders which I always heard was a sign of approaching bad weather.  How much more rain can we get over-here in God’s country?  We had a whopping 3.3” in Newport last month and 5” of snow!  I am hoping that Ell Niño will get a grip and go somewhere else!  Shhh ... don’t tell anyone, but I do love snow!  I better get out there and see if I can still do the ‘snow dance’!  Ted is gonna frown on that remark, but hey!  It might be worth selling tickets to see!  LOL!

I just read an article on Good Reasons to Exercise and I quote:  Studies are showing that people who exercise suffer less from depression, anxiety, headaches, uncontrollable appetite and even age related decline in intelligence.  These good things happen not only because exercise keeps the brain richly supplied with blood but also because it tends to promote the release of chemicals thought to elevate mood!’  Hmmm!  I went to my Orthopedist the other day and asked why I was so weak in the legs.  He mentioned that since he completely over-hauled both knees within 8 months, he suggested that I WALK and a couple of days on the bicycle!  Well, all we have around here is ICE ... and since Ted won’t drive into Spokane everyday so I can walk Costco and shop ... we are thinking about going up to the Kalispel Indian Tribe’s new Wellness Clinic and WALK!  It is only a few miles north of us ... and I won’t be spending money, either!  J  Stayed tuned!!!

Hopefully, we will see many of you at the Laying of the new Seattle Valley Scottish Rite Building Cornerstone on Saturday.  If you have never witnessed a Cornerstone Laying, it might behoove you to come and share the afternoon with the Grand Master and the Grand Lodge of Washington.

Thought for the day: Some Weather Wisdom!  SUNSET COLORS:  A gray lowering sunset or one where the sky is green or yellowish green indicates rain!  A red sunrise with clouds lowering later in the morning also indicates rain.  A read sky at sunset indicates fair weather for the following day!  Wisdom from my dad:  Rain before 7 ... gone by 11!  Most often times, he is correct.

To quote friend Dianna:  Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man. - Benjamin Franklin

Until next time ...  Hearty Patriot Hugs, happy thoughts and May God Bless you all!
